Ep37 To Cartagena

Under a stormy sky we leave the protection of the anchorage at Malaga for the open sea, fortunately the thunder storm stays away but the engine starts to smell of burning and then the alternator stops charging. we have very little wind but put the jib out to keep us moving at about 2knots and we try and fix the problem.
It is soon apparent that the alternator is the curse of the problem having got too hot and burning out. We carry a spare onboard, so thankfully it is just a case of taking the old one off and putting the new one back on, which is not to big of a job in these conditions.
After that little happening it is straight back in to the passage, which went ok until the last night when the wind over the course of several hours changed directions through 360 degrees making the sea very angry and making Rhumor jump around like a jack in the box.
Then we start to get thunder and lighting and a strong wind that was coming straight from Cartagena which slows us down. When we think it cant get any worse we get a pan pan over the radio saying that there was three unmanned boats 20 to 35 foot in length drifting ten miles for the coast meaning that I can’t leave watch even for a toilet break, nice.
the drama doesn’t finish -Rebecca wakes up and starts being sea sick, after the front loading fridge spills all its contents on the floor. so we push Rhumor to get to Cartagena as quick as possible but this means arriving in the dark, so we found an anchorage just out side of the marina and got some well earned rest.
Once the sun is up and the marina is open we get straight in. The team in the marina were great at helping the tired crew get Rhumor in safely. The marina is a good one with helpful and friendly staff they even organised a meeting with the border force to get us checked back in to Spain which was planned for the following day. Checking in was easy and the man that checked us in was friendly and helpful and with in no time we had our passports re stamped and were ready to explore. We spent the next few days enjoying looking around Cartagena’s Forts, theatre and Museum’s. Before we knew it, it was time to slip the lines and get Rhumor fuelled up and ready for her next trip to Ibiza.
Thanks for watching from the crew of Rhumor.
