Riley’s Solo Voyage: A Month Sailing a 60ft Trimaran in the Philippines

Riley from Sailing La Vagabonde embarked on an intriguing solo voyage, testing the single-handed capabilities of her impressive 60ft trimaran across the waters of the Philippines. For a month, Riley navigated through various weather conditions and faced challenges that pushed her skills to their limits.

Initially anchored near Borai, Riley found herself plagued by mosquitoes and sought a change of scenery. The winds came from an unusual Southwest direction, causing storms and raising concerns. Despite the dangers marked in some areas, Riley decided it was time to move on. Motoring because she needed to charge her batteries, she planned her destination without hesitation.

The sail area on Riley’s main boat is double that of her ultr, leading many to question if it could truly be managed single-handedly, especially by herself. Determined to prove her skills, she set off on the journey.

Explaining in detail the areas such as Apo Reef, known for its beautiful coral and diverse marine life including various species like Buttonfishes and Parrotfishes, Riley emphasizes its importance as a protected area. Despite being spared from the Global Coral Bleaching event that impacted many other parts of the world, this reef hosts thousands of fish species, mammals, turtles, and sharks.

Riley’s voyage was not without its trials. At one point, her anchor chain became tangled, causing additional stress as she navigated through passages such as Cavita Passage. Her detailed account, including her thoughts on meditation and mental health, highlights the importance of mindfulness in facing the challenges encountered during a long solo journey.

With plans to get the boat ready for a trip to Japan, Riley reflects on the preparation needed. Highlighting her team’s support from Dylan at OBG, Vtus guys, and Mark from Rapido, she underscores the importance of having a solid support system in any endeavor.

The episode culminates in Riley’s return to Subic Bay, where she meticulously prepares her trimaran for upcoming offshore journeys. Through all the trials, including successfully docking her large vessel in a tight marina space, Riley showcases not just her sailing prowess but also her mental resilience and determination. As she sets sail again with the full crew for Japan, excitement is palpable.

The video offers more than just a visual treat; it’s a testament to human spirit, perseverance, and the sheer joy of exploring the world’s wonders. Riley’s solo voyage is an inspiration to anyone who dreams of venturing beyond familiar shores. Join her next adventure as she continues to challenge expectations and explore the seas with unwavering enthusiasm.
