Electric Boat Repair Journey with Amber and Peter
In a fascinating YouTube video by Sailing Isara, hosts Amber and Peter delve into their recent experience repairing an electric Duffy boat owned by Amber’s mom. This journey is not only about fixing a broken vessel but also about exploring the world of electric boats, their benefits, and challenges. Let’s dive into this exciting episode.
The story begins with the acquisition of the Duffy electric boat by Amber’s mother for her new lakefront property. However, one of the first hurdles was transporting it onto a custom trailer that initially seemed inadequate due to the boat’s weight and deeper draft. Despite initial challenges, they successfully managed to move the boat.
Fast forward to another visit where Peter’s stepdad gets into the act of boat repairs. The boat requires several fixes, notably involving battery replacement. Initially, it was powered by a charger and a DC-DC converter that converted 48 volts to 12 for charging the batteries. However, they opt for a separate battery charger and a new DC-DC converter.
The team also discovers highly mangled wires both under the instrument console and elsewhere on the boat. Undeterred, Peter sets about stripping these back and using Wago lever nut connectors to make neat connections. Their tool kit is comprehensive, including a handy dandy tool bag that seems essential for any DIY project.
After several days of work installing new parts like the charger, DC-DC converter, and wiring the AC, they were finally ready for the first test run with the newly installed 48V batteries. The anticipation is palpable as they check if anything burns or sinks during this inaugural cruise on their newly repaired electric Duffy boat.
The testing phase reveals that the boat performs remarkably well, especially appreciated is its silence and low maintenance compared to conventional boats. Amber mentions previous experiences with electric power on their boat Isara, praising it for its cool factor and the joy of turning the throttle without the typical noise and smell associated with gas-powered boats.
One can’t help but admire Amber’s determination and Peter’s skill in tackling this project, demonstrating a clear appreciation for electric power, especially in long-distance cruising and tranquil sunset sails. The final moments show them sailing under the sunset, looking forward to more adventures together on their refurbished Duffy boat.
The video concludes with a heartfelt thank-you from Amber to her audience for sticking around despite significant gaps between uploads due to personal and life events that have taken up much of their time. She promises to try and keep the content rolling at least once a month, hopefully more often as they continue their sailing adventures.
This journey is not just about repairing a boat but also about exploring alternatives in boating, emphasizing environmental considerations and modern technology. For all those interested in sailing and electric boats, this video offers both practical advice and inspiration for future projects or hobbies.
