If ever a place name was completely accurate, it’s Punta Mala Panama, or Bad Point. This point in Panama is notorious for rough sailing as unpredictable weather swings, strong currents and heavy freighter traffic headed for the Panama Canal make sailing around this point a tough challenge. Toss in a highly active fishing fleet and the rainy season and you have the makings for one of our toughest passages yet. Initially planned as an overnight sail from Vista Mar Marina around Punta Mala to Naranjo, our trip quickly became a tacking battle to get up and around the point. We dodge fishing boats, freighters, crazy changes in wind direction and finally get to use one of our “bail out” anchorages that we always place on our chart as a “just in case” backup plan. Tune in and check out the fun!
