Discover the Enthralling Throne of Death Sailing Adventure in Italian Islands
Sail with us as we jump headfirst into a captivating adventure around the beautiful Italian islands, particularly the ominous Fortress Island known as Castello Aragonese. Experience the allure and intrigue of ancient fortifications and dive deep into history.
The Journey Begins
We set sail from a tranquil night anchor in Procida, leaving early morning to explore the island. As we navigate through warm Mediterranean waters with our delightful crew, it’s impossible not to be charmed by the surrounding scenery and camaraderie.
Castello Aragonese – A Strategic Island Fortress
The fortress on Ischia’s coast, Castello Aragonese, boasts a rich history. Originally built in 474 BC and then captured by the Romans in the 3rd century BC, it saw significant destruction in later centuries due to conflicts with French and British forces.
An Eerie Encounter – The Throne of Death
The island’s dark side becomes apparent as we explore. Inside the castle walls, a chilling reminder of its grim past lies in wait – the ‘Throne of Death.’ This macabre sight consists of thrones with holes in their bases, suggesting a disturbing purpose related to decomposing nuns and their collected juices, used for meditation by living sisters.
The Walk Back and Water Taxi
A steep walk and an intriguing water taxi ride later, we find ourselves back at the boat. The fortress’s strategic location with only one pathway leading up to it, complemented by excellent defense mechanisms like oil and boiling water drops on invaders, makes for a formidable barrier.
A Leisurely Evening in Isia
After exploring the castle, we drop anchor at the main town of Ischia, navigating through busy ferry boats while appreciating the vibrant atmosphere. Enjoying dinner with the crew and wandering through the town under moonlit skies, we uncover local delights such as wine bars and bustling docks.
A Thrilling Conclusion
The ‘Throne of Death’ sailing adventure leaves a lasting impression. From the strategic Fortress Island’s chilling history to enjoying the vibrant culture and cuisine in Ischia, it’s an experience not easily forgotten. This journey epitomizes what water adventure tourism offers – unforgettable experiences in beautiful surroundings, rich with cultural heritage.
We Sail to the Italian island of Oschia which is home to the island fortress castle of Catello Aragonese. We finally get to cool off in the Mediterranean sea and then head ashore to explore the castle where they have the Thrones of Death!
