Sailing boat DIY is something that I imagine most boat owners have to get to grips with at some level or another.

*****Disclaimer*****

This is NOT a how to video, this is a ‘how did it go when Dominic attempted it himself’ video, ha ha, no seriously. We will post links to reputable how to videos at the bottom of this description.

**********************

We’re learning that a sailing boat has so many systems to try to get to grips with, a learning curve that’s even steeper when you have exactly ZERO experience in any of them!!

The other options for sail boat owners is to pay someone else to take care of these jobs for you, but this presents two rather large problems. Firstly the cost for anything boat related adds up really fast, and second, what if you’re caught with a problem somewhere where there isn’t any easily accessible help? For these two reasons alone we are making it our mission to get to grips with as much as possible before we set sail.

In this video Dominic attempts to save over £300 by servicing the Volvo Penta sail drive on our boat, himself. With exactly ZERO experience in anything mechanical, he calls upon the amazing resources of the internet in an attempt to both broaden his understanding of a sail boats systems, as well as save some much needed money, especially in these unprecedented Covid-19 times.

A couple of special mentions go out to:

John Smith of http://www.solacemarine.co.uk who was very kind with his time and helped Dominic better understand how to service a Volvo Penta Engine.

Also a huge shout out to Chris over at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC64BFQulaAIl1xWG4DJlQ8A

Chris has made so many videos that make it feel easy to attempt jobs that otherwise would be farmed out to the experts, so if you’re interested in an actual ‘How To’ video, his is the channel to go and check out!

We Almost Threw These Away… Now Look

We almost didn’t bother with these. Late in the season, we collected a handful of fallen acorns from the forest floor—fully expecting most of them to fail. Everything we’d read (and been told) suggested they wouldn’t sprout this late. So we nearl...

Could We Actually Live Like This?

We headed into our woodland to cook a proper Dutch oven pizza over the fire… but this trip turned into something a bit more special. It was Hudson’s 2nd birthday, so we decided to celebrate it the only way that makes sense for us — deep in the fores...

I Nearly Lost My Finger | Some Good News, Some Bad

This week I had a close call with a log splitter and nearly lost my finger while working in our woodland. I’ll show the injury later in the video for those who are morbidly curious. After that scare, the week took an unexpected turn. My wife found an a...

We Bought a Woodland – Ep2 – A Problem in the Woods

We bought a woodland, and this is episode two. Lately my dad has been struggling, and sometimes the only thing you can do is show up and try to make life a little easier in the ways you know how. This day in the woods wasn’t about fixing everything or ...

Carly Had a Great Idea… and It Might Actually Work

This video started with a simple idea from Carly — using what we already have around us in the woodland to create something genuinely useful. We won’t say what it is at the start, because half the fun was working it out as we went along… but by the ...
