In the latest episode of Sailing Aquarius Around The World, the crew shares the harrowing tale of their recent dismasting incident and their heroic efforts to repair their vessel. In this summary of the main points discussed in the video, we’ll provide an overview of their remarkable journey and explore the team’s incredible work to re-mast and restore Aquarius.
In January 2024, the crew of Aquarius faced a devastating dismasting incident in the Atlantic Ocean. With no land in sight and over 1,200 miles of open water between them and Martinique, they persevered by motoring for ten days to reach safety.
The process of repairing and re-masting Aquarius took a significant amount of time, with 240 hours spent on the initial restoration efforts following the dismasting. Over the subsequent months, the crew continued their grueling work to restore the ship to its former glory.
The Power Boats Team stepped in to help repair Aquarius, and they began their work with urgency. In just three-and-a-half hours, both masts were removed from the ship’s deck. Over the following months, the team worked tirelessly to restore every part of the vessel.
The journey to repair Aquarius was fraught with challenges, but the crew’s determination and skill allowed them to push forward. In addition to their efforts at sea, the team sought assistance from other boaters they met along the way, fueling their vessel multiple times to help them reach safety.
In this video episode, the crew also shares updates on the many navigation lights they installed during their repairs. From hydrosounders to deck lights and antennas, each new addition plays a critical role in keeping Aquarius safe as they continue their journey around the world.
If you’re captaining your own ship, take a cue from the Power Boats Team and remember that once you start something, you must see it through. With dedication, perseverance, and the help of a strong team, there’s no challenge too great to overcome.

Re-Masting of Aquarius Part 2. Ken finishes the works at Power Boats in Trinidad. We were able to complete the Re-Masting in less than two months from the day we hauled out at Power Boats, to the day we set sail to the VIBE Boat Show in St Thomas. In this time we hauled out, bought FriendshipII, took the masts, sold FriendshipII, and re-masted Aquarius. We had to replace almost everything on the masts from FriendshipII; Lines, lights, anemometers, lightning protection, antennas and wires... All replaced!. To add to the replacement of the masts, all the engine, fiberglass, and metal work, and much of the electronics replaced due to obsolescence. This was a mission that could have gone either way. But, somehow Ken assembled a great team that put Aquarius back together for the party at the VIBE BOAT SHOW in St Thomas. Many people at Power Boats were amazed that Aquarius set sail, on time!
Thanks to all the workers at Power Boats!
And thanks so much for watching 🙏
