Atlantic Ocean Crossing Part I & Cape Verde / Sailing Aquarius Ep. 187

Join the crew of Sailing Aquarius as they embark on an exhilarating adventure across the Atlantic Ocean. Episode 187 of the series takes viewers on a journey filled with challenges, camaraderie, and the allure of distant shores.

Setting Sail

The crew sets off from the Canary Islands, bound for an Atlantic Ocean Crossing. With over 2,600 nautical miles ahead, they face the challenge of navigating prevailing trade winds. Their destination: Cape Verde.

“Winds were favorable and we were moving forward at our average speed of 5.8 knots,” shares one crew member. “That should take about 6 days if we decide to stop in Cape Verde.”

Encountering Challenges

As the journey progresses, the crew faces various challenges. From slow speeds to unexpected storms, each day brings new obstacles. “Today is going to be our second full day,” remarks a crew member. “We’re hoping to get that up to 6.5 knots.”

Amidst the challenges, the crew reminisces about past experiences, including their last use of the ballooner and a memorable encounter with whales and dolphins.

Drone Mishap

Disaster strikes as the crew attempts to deploy their drone. High waves and technical issues lead to the loss of their equipment. “We lost a drone,” laments a crew member. “But now sails are back.”

The mishap serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of ocean travel and the importance of preparation.

Arrival in Cape Verde

After days at sea, the crew finally reaches Cape Verde, greeted by whale sightings and the excitement of exploring a new country. “Welcome to Cape Verde, Country number 50,” exclaims a crew member.

Upon arrival, they encounter friendly locals and fellow sailors, adding to the sense of camaraderie that accompanies life on the open seas.

Exploring Cape Verde

The crew takes advantage of their time in Cape Verde, enjoying local cuisine and hospitality. From exploring the marina to sampling fresh produce, each experience adds to their adventure.

As they prepare to depart, the crew reflects on their time in Cape Verde, grateful for the memories made and the friendships forged along the way.

Conclusion

As the crew of Sailing Aquarius continues their journey, they leave behind the shores of Cape Verde, bound for new horizons. With each passing day, they embrace the challenges and joys of life at sea, knowing that the next adventure awaits just beyond the horizon.

We left the Canary Islands, Tenerife for the Atlantic Ocean Crossing it is a little over 2,600 NM going straight, but due to prevailing trade winds majority of sailors and we sail south towards Cape Verde. We were not sure if we would stop there or continue, and we were ready for either.
But the winds dictated to stop otherwise we would face 3-4 days with no wind at all... So here we go country Number 50: Cape Verde!
