GREAT BAHAMA BANK OVERNIGHT ANCHORING | Sailboat Story 105

35 miles from land and halfway across the Great Bahama Bank, we anchor overnight.

Anchoring overnight on the Great Bahama Bank is something that you do not want to take lightly. Depending on sea conditions, it can be a magical and peaceful experience, or it could be once of the worst nights of your life.

We choose to anchor right next to a very shallow spot called Mackie Shoal. By doing this, we increase our chances of avoiding nighttime shipping traffic because they invariably avoid the shoal. Essentially, in order for them to hit is in the middle of the night, they would have to be sailing over the shoal, and that doesn’t happen – we hope.

We also light up the boat really well using solar lanterns that we make sure are fully charged up during the day.

Finally, the reason we choose to stop here is because the days are much shorter in the winter months and we prefer not to sail at night. By anchoring at Mackie Shoal on The Great Bahama Bank, we are able to have a nice break halfway through our banks crossing to rest up and then pick up where we left off on the next day.
