SailAway 279 – Some Experiments Fail but New Techniques Are On The Horizon

In the latest episode of SailAway, the crew ventures into uncharted territory as they attempt various experiments to renovate their catamaran. Among these attempts are several trials with vinyl wall renovation methods that did not yield the desired results.

Failing Vinyl Experiments

The team initially tried to replace worn-out vinyl walls using commonly used spray adhesives, which unfortunately led to adverse consequences. Some of the adhesive ate through the foam backing on certain pieces of vinyl causing it to deteriorate rapidly.

The Hobbit Hole Experiment

In search of alternative methods, they decided to experiment with painting a section of their boat – referred to as the ‘Hobbit Hole’. The space offered an ideal environment for trial purposes since it is concealed and unlikely to be viewed by others. Using leftover paint from a past project on the doors, they coated the wall with primer and applied a fresh coat.

Assessment of the Painted Hobbit Hole

After evaluating the results, it was evident that while the painted walls looked better in the Hobbit Hole, they didn’t match their vision for River’s bedroom. The textured finish underneath the paint felt too unfinished and rustic, particularly for a room meant for a child.

Embracing Textured Fabrics

The crew ultimately chose to explore options with textured fabrics instead. Utilizing a few old sail samples, they opted for a lighter and more patterned option that would contrast the room’s current aesthetics.

Conclusion

The journey to renovate their catamaran hasn’t been smooth sailing, but it’s provided opportunities for growth and experimentation. Despite some failed methods like spray adhesive on the walls, they are determined to push forward, testing new ideas in areas where nobody can see, such as the Hobbit Hole. This process allows them to hone techniques that would ultimately lead to an improved living space aboard their vessel.
