Retrospective: Our Terrifying Engine Failure Night at Sea When We Had to Be Rescued

We experienced one of our most terrifying sails, the night our engine failed and left us powerless in strong currents and bad weather while sailing past the Channel Islands, heading for Lézardrieux.

Far from land and in the dark, we made a PAN-PAN call on the VHF to the French sea rescue. With six knots of current against us and no engine, we couldn’t make it on our own and had to be towed into the marina.

In this video, we sit down and share what happened that night and why our engine overheated so we couldn’t use it. We had just had the heat exchanger serviced and replaced when we bought the boat in Flensburg, Germany, only a month earlier. But somehow, they put back a damaged one with a hole in it, which caused all our cooling water to leak out...

We also learned a lot from this experience, especially not to head out with such a small margin like we did that day. Hopefully, someone else can learn something from it too.💙

📍 Route: Barneville-De-Carteret (France) to Lézardrieux (France)
⛵ Distance sailed: 1556 Nautical Miles
🧑‍✈️ Crew: Erik, Linn & Nora the dachshund

If you’re new to our channel, welcome! 🩵 We’re Linn and Erik, a Swedish couple in our late 20s who quit our jobs, rented out our apartment, and set off to sail from Stockholm to the Mediterranean together with our sausage dog. We started the journey in our unique 33-foot sailboat from 1980, which we sold in Kiel, and luckily, one week later we bought a new boat, a Bavaria 37 from 2000, more suited for the adventures ahead.
