Van conversions have become increasingly popular as people look for affordable ways to live on the road. However, one step that many van lifers often overlook is the installation of a proper wall framing system. While simply attaching plywood directly to the structure of the van may seem like an easy solution, it can lead to complications down the line.

Why a Proper Wall Framing System is Important

A proper wall framing system allows for easy access behind the walls for maintenance and repairs, as well as ensuring that the van’s interior remains structurally sound. In this episode of Odd Life Crafting, host explains why a traditional plywood-on-frame solution may not be ideal in the long run.

The Solution: Fastmount Clips

To create a strong yet removable wall framing system, Odd Life Crafting turns to Fastmount clips. These ingenious clips allow for seamless plywood panels to be attached without any exposed screws, creating a clean and professional look.

Benefits of Using Fastmount Clips

  • Easy access behind walls for maintenance or repairs
  • No exposed screws, creating a clean look
  • Versatile mounting options with various clip sizes and strengths available
  • Panels can be removed for easy inspection or modification

The Process of Installing Fastmount Clips

First, the team measures and cuts their plywood panels to size. Then they use a Kreg jig to create pocket holes for additional support and stability. Next, they install Fastmount clips at regular intervals along the framing system, ensuring that the panels will be secure but also easily removable as needed.

Finding the Right Male Clip for Your Plywood Thickness

The team carefully chooses the appropriate male clip to match their 4mm thick plywood panels. Odd Life Crafting discusses different Fastmount options, including self-tapping clips and those requiring glue or screw attachment.

Ensuring a Smooth Installation

To make sure their installation goes smoothly, the team performs a dry fit first, checking all measurements and angles before final assembly. This helps avoid costly mistakes and ensures a perfect fit for their custom van conversion.

Safety First: Adding Sikaflex to Reduce Noise

In addition to installing the Fastmount clips, the team applies Sikaflex 522 bond compound and sealant between their wall frames and the van’s structure. This not only helps reduce potential noise from wood-on-wood contact but also provides added security against potential shifts or movements in the walls over time.

The Final Result

With their sturdy and easily removable wall framing system installed, Odd Life Crafting can now move forward with building custom cabinets and walls that will make their van conversion a true home on wheels.

When thinking about van conversions there is one essential step that in our opinion many times neglected: the wall system.

We want to create a wall frame that is strong enough to screw cabinets to it but at the same we want a solution that makes it possible for us to inspect the inside of the wall any time we want. And that is the challenge for today's video.

We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.

We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
