Van Conversion: Our DIY BULKHEAD!
In this episode, we’re diving into a project we’ve been excited about since the beginning of our van conversion journey – replacing the standard bulkhead in our campervan with a custom-built, beautifully finished wall. This will not only give us more interior space but also make the van feel much more like a home on wheels.
However, as we’ve quickly learned, this project isn’t without its challenges. We started working on it several weeks ago but have been struggling to decide how and when to apply our chosen finishing materials. Originally, we planned to finish everything after gluing all the parts together, but upon closer inspection, we realized that method wouldn’t work for us.
Nevertheless, with a determined mindset, we decided to take the plunge and begin building and assembling our new bulkhead wall. Our goal was not only to replace the standard one but also to ensure it could still act as a safety barrier in case of an accident.
The Challenges
Throughout this episode, you’ll witness our struggles with balancing form and function while trying to complete this complex project. One key challenge was determining whether we should apply the finishing material before or after gluing all the pieces together. We initially planned to finish everything afterward but quickly realized that would be difficult.
After careful consideration, we decided to proceed with building the bulkhead and applying the finishing later when it was more convenient. This approach proved to be quite successful, although not without its own set of obstacles.
The Finishing Touches
Despite the initial setbacks, we managed to create a stunning laminated wall that complements the overall aesthetics of our campervan. By using high-quality materials and our meticulous craftsmanship, we were able to achieve a beautiful and durable end result.
To ensure maximum satisfaction with our project, we also installed double-sided tape along the edges of the wall for added support and protection against moisture. This step proved to be an excellent decision as it significantly enhanced the overall appearance and quality of our bulkhead wall.
Next Steps
Although this episode focuses on completing our custom-built bulkhead, there are still some additional improvements we plan to make in the future. For instance, we’ll be installing a small storage box for shower essentials like shampoo and soap, as well as applying final touches such as trims and finishes.
Conclusion
In conclusion, our DIY bulkhead project was both challenging and rewarding. We faced numerous uncertainties throughout the process but ultimately succeeded in creating a beautiful, functional, and practical solution for our van conversion needs.
We hope this episode inspires you to take on similar projects with confidence, even when facing obstacles along the way. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue working on various aspects of our campervan conversion journey!

We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.
We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
