Are you looking for the perfect way to convert your cargo van into a cozy mobile home? Our latest episode takes you through our incredible journey as we install custom windows, giving our living space an aesthetic appeal and functionality. With expert guidance and unique tips and tricks, follow along as we share insights on how to create custom frames, select high-quality materials, and seal for water-tight results.

Installing Custom Windows in Your Van Conversion

The first step to this DIY van conversion project was figuring out how we wanted our windows. We knew that we needed a combination of functional and aesthetically pleasing options.

Selecting the Right Windows

Once we decided on the design, we had to choose the windows themselves. We opted for double acrylic units as they provided both durability and an unobstructed view.

Create Custom Frames

Our cargo van presented us with unique challenges. The doors were not straight or flat, which required precision in cutting the holes and designing custom frames to accommodate their curves.

Sourcing Quality Materials

We didn’t want just any sealant for our windows; we needed one that would provide a secure fit and allow us to remove the windows if necessary without causing damage. After some research, we chose butyl Sikaflex, which not only provides an airtight and watertight seal but is also easily removable.

Securing Windows

To install our custom windows, we first secured the frames inside the van with screws. We then applied the butyl Sikaflex sealant around the edges of the window frame and pressed it firmly against the exterior of the van.

Finishing Touches

We took special care to ensure that our windows fit perfectly and securely. This involved trimming excess sealant, aligning frames properly, and ensuring a consistent pressure throughout the installation.

The Outcome

Our custom windows turned out beautifully! They not only look great but also function perfectly, offering both privacy and a clear view of our surroundings. The use of double acrylic units has provided added durability, ensuring they will last through countless adventures.

Next Steps

We’re excited to continue transforming our van and look forward to sharing more tips and tricks along the way. From sealing the edges to adding finishing touches like blinds and mosquito nets, each step brings us closer to achieving our dream mobile home.

We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.

We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
