Ep.341 – Shower Cabin Update

This week we are focusing on completing our side wall for the shower cabin and getting it ready to be installed. It has been a learning experience and an exciting process as we get ready for boat building.

We have worked diligently this week, ensuring precision in every cut and applying meticulous attention to each aspect of the wall frame. The side wall now features new insulated finishing which not only looks fantastic but will also prevent future condensation due to its added layer of insulation.

The Building Process

To build our shower cabin wall, we first carefully cut and fitted each piece of plywood using a meticulously crafted template. This step required great attention to detail in order to ensure a snug fit between the pieces without any gaps or overlaps.

After completing the framing process, we applied multiple layers of epoxy resin on both sides of the wall for added waterproofing and durability. Following this, we installed our new black laminated finishing that provided an immaculate appearance and increased water resistance due to the use of high-quality materials.

The Challenge of Timing

One major challenge encountered during our latest episode was timing. Applying the SikaFlex adhesive requires precision in both application and timing; if left to set for too long, it becomes more difficult to apply evenly without creating a less desirable finish.

In order to overcome this obstacle, we carefully measured and allocated time slots specifically for each part of the process. This allowed us not only to complete our project efficiently but also achieve an aesthetically pleasing result that exceeded expectations.

Moving Forward

As we progress towards the final stages of constructing our shower cabin, we’re gaining invaluable experience and knowledge which will greatly benefit us when it’s time to embark on building our new 43ft aluminum exploration sailboat.

Although unexpected events like busy weeks at the boatyard can sometimes disrupt plans, they also provide opportunities for learning new skills and adapting to unforeseen challenges. Stay tuned as we continue to prepare ourselves for this exciting next chapter!

We built another part of our shower cabin using a different technique.

We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.

We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
