Diy Camper Van Electrics Ac Dc: A Comprehensive Guide

In this episode of Odd Life Crafting, we embark on an adventure to transform our camper van’s electrical system from scratch. Our goal is to set up a safe and easy-to-maintain AC/DC electrical system that powers our new lithium battery while accommodating future solar panels, DC-DC charger, and fridge installation.

The Journey Begins

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of our camper van’s electrical system overhaul, let us take a moment to share a bit about ourselves. Hello, I’m Roberta, and together with my partner Duca, we embarked on an incredible journey restoring a sailboat that had been neglected for 22 years. After two exciting years exploring the Brazilian coast and parts of the Caribbean, our lives took another remarkable turn when we moved to France and began constructing our new 43-foot aluminum exploration sailboat.

Designing the Electrical System

The first step in our electrification journey is to carefully plan the location and size of each conduit. We will be running various-sized conduits, including 20mm, 25mm, and 32mm options, behind our wall panel to house the wires for a more organized and safe setup.

Creating Conduits

To create conduits that fit our needs, we make sure to measure the wires and choose appropriate conduit sizes. While attempting to use pre-made guides provided with some of the conduits, we decide against them as they prove to be inconvenient for our setup.

Installing the Conduits

With the conduits ready, we install them by making larger holes in the wall panel to accommodate multiple wires and securely glueing all of our conduit options together into one cohesive block for a clean installation.

Introducing Our Components

For this episode, we’ve gathered the following components: the Xantrex Freedom XC 2000 230V inverter/charger, a 30A MMP Solar Controller, and a 30A DC-DC charger. Our aim is to establish a well-balanced system that includes battery fuses, shunts, an on/off switch, positive/negative busbars, and all the necessary wiring for safe operation.

Ensuring Safety Measures

One of the critical steps in our electrical installation is to install proper fusing and grounding. Not only does this enhance safety during the build process, but it also safeguards against potential future issues.

The Final Testing

Once we’ve set up all of our components and organized the conduits, it’s time for the final testing. We configure the inverter/charger settings for a lithium battery, connect shore power to see if it charges the battery, and test the system with all the appliances planned for our camper van.

Congratulations!

We’re thrilled to announce that after setting up the Xantrex inverter/charger and configuring it for lithium batteries, we successfully charged our battery with shore power! With a full charge on the battery, the solar panels are also operational. Our electrical system is now ready for future installations such as refrigeration and other essential appliances.

Looking Forward

While we still have many aspects of our camper van build ahead, this major milestone allows us to confidently move forward in the project knowing that we have a reliable and functional AC/DC electrical system. Stay tuned for more exciting updates on our journey!

We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.

We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
