DIY Campervan Electrical System Installation: Episode Recap
This week, Roberta and Duca dive headfirst into the electrical system of their campervan. As they explain in the video, this project has been on their minds for a while now, so getting started is truly exciting for them.
With plans to add an inverter/charger, batteries, solar MPPT controller, battery monitor, Gateway CPU, and other essential components, our dynamic duo sets off on making progress towards transforming the van into a cozy home on wheels. Alongside these additions, they also decide it’s time for their own Barnacle security system after being dragged anchor multiple times during their sailing days.
The couple first discusses the temporary electrical installation before deciding to focus on other aspects of the van first. After some adjustments and changes in plans, they then move forward with adding insulation inside the van near the wheel arch to minimize noise levels. As Duca points out, the wheel arch is known for creating significant noise due to air turbulence around it.
Using leftover materials from a previous cork installation project while sailing with friends Chris and Jenni of Sail Hub, they opt for natural sheep wool as their insulation choice because not only does it provide excellent insulation, but it also saves them money as these supplies were free at the time.
The pair then moves on to detailing all components that make up the campervan’s electrical system. Their main focus revolves around a 240 amp-hours lithium battery from Xantrex. After considering the weight constraints and current capacity needs, they ultimately decide to go with one such battery instead of two as initially planned. The positioning for this new addition is clear – exactly where the new floor will meet the battery box’s side panel.
The inverter/charger selected by Roberta and Duca happens to be similar to what was used on their previous boat, Odd. It is a 230V 2000W model that easily fits into the newly formed wall space without requiring any difficult boat yoga positions like before!
In addition to these components, they mention MPPT controller (identical to that used in their sailing days), battery monitor screen for a cabinet later installed, Gateway CPU to connect everything with an iPad or screen, fuse box, and battery switch for emergencies. Finally, the Barnacle Mate connects all devices together via internet so security can be maintained even when the owners are far away from home.
The next step involved charging the lithium batteries during van operation – thus requiring a DC to DC charger called Orion (same as on Odd) to prevent mixing Lead acid and lithium battery charge differences. With everything discussed, they planned on starting physical installation of these systems when certain supplies arrived later in the week.
In this episode, you also get to see them tackle various challenges like running wires through shafts and using bus bars for positive/negative circuit fusion. The end goal is to have an organized and working electrical system by the end of next week when all supplies come in – wish them luck!
We started the installation of the electrical system of our campervan.

We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). On the season 4 we sailed for 2 years (exploring the Brazilian coast and part of the Caribbean), we sold our boat and we moved to Europe. The last season we are starting to build a new aluminum 43ft sailboat and a new life.
We hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
