Sailing to Atlantis (Two)

Sailing to Atlantis: The New England Seamount Acoustic Experiment

In this episode, the Ocean Research Project embarks on an extraordinary expedition, sailing to Atlantis in search of underwater secrets and scientific discoveries. Our journey takes us to the enchanting world of New England’s sea mountains, as we collaborate with the renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to explore these enigmatic geological formations.

The expedition begins at the Chesapeake Bay, where we sail up the coast, encountering headwinds that eventually transform into a more favorable breeze. As we make our way north, we face the challenge of an approaching squall. To prepare for the storm, we secure the sails and ensure everything on deck remains firmly in place.

Upon arriving at Woods Hole Institution Oceanographic Institution, we find ourselves surrounded by state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge research facilities. Our goal is to understand the significance of underwater sea mountains and their relationship with the Gulf Stream. These volcanic protrusions, located beneath a crucial bend in the current, create an area of chaotic circulation that demands further investigation.

To gain valuable insights, we deploy autonomous robots equipped with acoustic Doppler current profilers. As we navigate the uncharted waters, we measure the velocity and direction of water currents, collecting essential data to unravel the mysteries surrounding these sea mountains.

Nicole plays a pivotal role in this expedition, diligently working on her final report of microplastic pollution survey results gathered from our previous voyage. Despite the challenges posed by rolling waves, she remains focused and dedicated, contributing significantly to our research endeavors.

The Significance of Underwater Sea Mountains

Underwater sea mountains are a testament to Earth’s volcanic activity, formed through the rising of magma from the planet’s mantle. These fascinating geological features provide unique habitats for marine life and hold valuable insights into oceanic circulation patterns. As we venture closer to these enigmatic structures, we discover the critical role they play in shaping the Gulf Stream and the surrounding ecosystem.

Collaboration with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

The expedition’s success relies on our collaboration with the esteemed Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. By joining forces with these experts, we gain access to cutting-edge technology and invaluable knowledge that enriches our understanding of the ocean’s depths. Together, we work tirelessly to uncover the secrets hidden beneath the waves.

Discovering Marine Life and Environmental Issues

Throughout our journey, we employ various tools and techniques to study marine life and environmental challenges in these unexplored waters. By analyzing microplastic pollution data gathered by Nicole, we aim to raise awareness about the urgent need for ocean conservation efforts.

Navigating Squalls and Rolling Waves

The expedition is not without its trials, as we encounter squalls and strong winds that threaten our progress. By preparing diligently and securing our gear, we ensure the safety of our vessel and crew, proving that adaptability is crucial for successful marine exploration.

An Educational Expedition Like No Other

This expedition represents a unique opportunity to learn about underwater sea mountains and their significance in shaping oceanic currents. By experiencing this remarkable journey first-hand, we invite you to join us as we explore the unknown depths of our planet’s oceans.

Together, let’s unravel the mysteries of Atlantis and discover the wonders hidden beneath the waves. With each step forward, we gain a deeper appreciation for the beauty and complexity of our blue planet.
