Transforming Our Helm Into A Custom Masterpiece (MJ Sailing - Ep 335)

Episode Title: [Transforming Our Helm Into A Custom Masterpiece (MJ Sailing – Ep 335)]

In this exciting episode of MJ Sailing, Captain Matt and Kelli embark on a transformative journey as they turn their helm into a custom masterpiece during what they call High Build primer day. After eagerly waiting for the rain to subside, they’re now ready to proceed with their plans.

As mentioned in the video transcription, the couple has taped off the steps and bulkhead number six, ensuring that all exposed areas will be coated with high-build primer. This includes other parts of the helm station as well, particularly where it connects with the cabin top and the storage unit down below. Additionally, they plan to apply the primer on the port side where the cabin side joins up with bulkhead sticks extending into the cockpit.

Applying Super Build Primer

To start the application process, they use Alex Seale SuperBuild primer. The gray color of the primer is noticeable as they mix it together, but once applied, it comes out white.

They give the primer 15 minutes to cure before beginning the spraying process, and throughout this time, viewers are treated to a nostalgic montage of memories set to music.

The Transformation

After allowing sufficient curing time for the primer, Captain Matt inspects their work. He is genuinely impressed and excited by the transformation that has taken place in their helm station.

The previously exposed seams, joins, and blended areas now look more cohesive and like a molded piece, with Matt commending his work in routing, bonding, and fairing them out. The port side of the cockpit is also coming together exceptionally well.

Working Conditions

Nevertheless, as temperatures rise to scorching levels on Kent Island, Captain Matt and Kelli find it difficult to continue working under such harsh conditions. Consequently, they choose to close the tent and head to Annapolis for a break, visiting friends who own boats at Chesapeake Harbor Marina.

Happily Ever After

The day takes a turn when they visit Metropolitan Kitchen and Rooftop Bar. On Tuesdays, they offer an excellent happy hour with small plates available for $10. Gathering a few friends around to share their culinary experiences adds a pleasant twist to their otherwise tiring day.

Conclusion

The video episode wraps up by highlighting the significant progress made thus far in transforming the helm station. Despite facing challenges such as sweltering temperatures, Captain Matt and Kelli remain focused on their vision.

Viewers are left inspired to take on similar projects that require patience, creativity, and perseverance in achieving a one-of-a-kind masterpiece while enjoying some personal bonding time with their loved ones.

This week brings us a huge step forward, as we finally get a coat of primer on our helm and steps.

This is a project we have been working on here and there since November, with so many tweaks and little pieces coming together.

From the helm that was originally shipped to us in the container, we brought it further forward to the cockpit bulkhead and had to make many adjustments for it to sit in its new place. Steps were first mocked up, and then once it was warm enough out to do glassing in the ambient air of the tent, we were able to build the steps and the storage area that sits next to them.

Now, after bonding all these pieces together and fairing them to a smooth finish, we're able to coat all of it with our Super Build Primer from Alexseal Paint. The transformation has honestly left me breathless and so giddy for things to come! To think that something we planned out and built with our own hands looks like it always been a molded part of the boat, makes me so excited for how the rest of our catamaran is going to come together.

We hope you enjoy!
