This Isn't Boat Work - This Is An Art (MJ Sailing - Ep 330)

Firstly, let me say that Matt is doing some REALLY cool things with our helm station! And although he swears he's been filming the progress, as I went back to edit it, I can't find it anywhere. Time to do a search through every single SD card we own, haha.

So this week you get to follow me on my work through the boat. Big goal is 'Let's do the LAST bits of fairing which need to be accomplished before we can get final primer on!!'.

If you've seen us struggling with the line on the outboard side of the boat, we've finally thrown our hands up and decided that most of the areas will get white oak trim to cover that space (and hide our blinds?) and they no longer need work. Unfortunately, the heads and the aft cabins don't get this luxury.

I go through with a new trowel which has a large radius and try to touch up the last bits on here, although since we just sprayed primer, it's a little tough to tell exactly were I had been working.

My next project, especially in the areas where we don't have to worry about that line anymore, is to make coves to transition from the sides and furniture into the cabin sole! All these months of working in these areas and I'd completely forgotten!!

Join along on my last two days of work here as I touch up a few of the areas I'd been working on, and then roll on some of our high build primer to see how it blends in to the existing surfaces.

We hope you enjoy!!

In this exhilarating episode of MJ Sailing, Matt and Jessica dive into the intricate world of boat restoration as they tackle the challenging task of refining the chine line on their beloved vessel. With meticulous attention to detail and an artistic touch, they transform what seemed like a daunting project into a masterpiece.

The Art of Perfection

Having worked on the chine line for an extended period, Matt and Jessica have finally achieved a rounded shape that significantly improves the aesthetics of their boat’s exterior. This milestone is a testament to their perseverance and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Rounding Out the Chine Line

As they continue refining the chine line, they emphasize the importance of blending the various components seamlessly. Using a combination of fine filler and their specialized tools, they work to create a smooth transition from one section to another.

High-Build Primer Application

Determined to maintain the flawless appearance of their work, Matt and Jessica apply a high-build primer using a foam roller. Despite the challenges presented by the foam roller’s tendency to disintegrate, they persevere in creating an even coat across the surface.

Artistry Over Jobs

In a poignant moment of reflection, Matt acknowledges that what they have been doing is not merely a job but an art form. The precision and dedication demonstrated throughout the episode showcase their deep passion for the marine craftsmanship.

Finding Inspiration in the Journey

As they close out the week, Matt and Jessica find solace in their accomplishments, recognizing that each detail contributes to the overall beauty of their boat. Their unwavering commitment to the artistry of restoration inspires fellow enthusiasts and highlights the significance of nurturing one’s passion.

The Next Steps

Looking ahead, Matt and Jessica eagerly anticipate moving on to the final coats of primer and paint. With their newfound appreciation for the artistic nature of their work, they are better equipped than ever to tackle future challenges and bring their vision for the perfect boat to life.
