As we near the end of this extensive renovation, there are still some final touches to be completed. Among them is trimming down and grinding our cabin top to create a seamless appearance on both sides. Once complete, we’ll be able to install acrylic windows for improved visibility while sailing.
Overall, this master berth transformation has been a significant undertaking – but the result is absolutely worth it! We are excited to show off our progress and can’t wait to continue working on this project. Stay tuned as we share more updates and exciting news about our sailboat’s journey!

To ensure a smooth finish, we sanded down all surfaces and bonded areas where necessary. We applied fairing compound to give our newly transformed master berth an even appearance and maintain a high level of quality throughout.

In addition to our helm station, we also took this opportunity to maximize storage space in the master berth area. We’ve recently bonded in new Line storage and an extra storage unit that will be easily accessible during our sailing adventures.

Our first step was to cut out the existing fiberglass wall that originally served as our cockpit seat back. This allowed us to run the steering lines down at the necessary angle for optimal performance. We’ve been experimenting with various methods to enclose this area, but we ultimately chose to run the lines through our cabin for added space and a straighter, more efficient route.
The result is a sleek and functional helm station that integrates seamlessly with our sailboat’s overall design. This project has been years in the making, and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out!

After years of hard work, we are thrilled to announce that our master berth transformation is well underway. In this episode of MJ Sailing, we’ll walk you through the challenges and triumphs as we bring new life to this critical space aboard our sailboat.
One of the most significant hurdles was installing our custom helm station. We needed two essential pieces in place – the helm itself and the steps leading down into the berth – before we could move forward with our design. After months of planning, we finally decided on a solution that provides us with ample storage and a smooth steering experience.

This week Matt has started a new project of working to finish off our master berth in the starboard hull.
The big hold up this entire time was that we didn't know exactly where the helm would be positioned or how the steering cables would come down to the area under our cockpit seats - which is also the back of our berth. And wouldn't it have been a pain to finish it all off originally, only to have to sand down portions so we could glass in extra space for this?
Luckily it was worth the wait, because we did in fact have to add an extra box for the cables to be able to lead down at a specific angle. Matt adds that in, and then also cuts out a space (under the cockpit steps) where the fan for our electric prop will be.
After those are in place he goes through and fits out and glasses in the shelf which will sit at the edge of inboard side of the bed. (Now I just need to find the perfect cup holder to fit in there!!)
While I have been off of the port side of the boat, perfecting all the coves so all those surfaces can (fingers crossed) get their final coat of finish primer on, Matt also takes to working on the cabin top. The extra edge that came on it to protect it during shipping needs to be cut off, so Matt uses a grinder to get the bulk of it off, and then sands it down to a smooth finish.
Things are really coming along, and I think we might see the light at the end of the tunnel, that by this fall we won't be covered head to toe in dust everyday. :)
We hope you enjoy!!
