Sealing Our Windows Shut with ShrinkWrap (MJ Sailing - Ep 339)

We are SO CLOSE to moving our catamaran out of the tent and into the work yard – but first we need to make sure she’s water tight!
In this week’s episode we go through the process of trying to seal up all of our openings, including hatches and windows.
There is an exciting moment where we pull our Vetus flush hatches out of storage and get them lined up in their moulds, giving us a slight peek at what the finished look will be. Sadly this is only being done to mark and drill the holes before they go back into their boxes and are stored away once more.
In their place, we cut out squares of spare plywood, which get a coat of epoxy on the top and edges. When they’ve dried overnight ,we go around the molds with strips of butyl tape, and place the plywood over them, with Matt drilling them in from the bottom.
The next step in getting water tight is to close up the cabin side windows with shink wrap. Since we’ve never done this before, we enlist the help of our friend Colby, and between the three of us, we get both sides taped up. After that I go through with our heat gun to shrink the cover down and make it taught.
The area next to the tent is coming along nicely – it’s all cleared out and ready for us! In next week’s episode you’ll see us prepare the space for the catamaran by putting down pavers, and then clearing out the tent of all our belongings. If we’re lucky, and if the weather cooperates, we’ll also be finally moving outside!
