Sailing at 77% of Wind Speed WHILE REGENERATING at 19 Amps! (MJ Sailing – Ep 327)

After an action-packed adventure in Vietnam exploring the factory where their new boat, a Max Cruise 44 catamaran, was being built, MJ Sailing team continued their Southeast Asia trip by flying to Thailand. The crew had been invited by Terry, one of their good friends who kept his actual boat in Pattaya, Thailand at Ocean Marina Resort.

Arrival in Pattaya and Meeting Max One

A brief one-hour flight from Ho Chi Minh to Bangkok, followed by a 90-minute drive down to Chon Buri region brought the team closer to their ultimate destination – Ocean Marina Resort. Upon arrival at sunset, they were impressed with the marina’s amenities and eagerly anticipated meeting Terry’s boat called Max One.

First Sailing Day in Thailand

The team arrived early morning to set sail the following day, after a delicious breakfast prepared by Terry. Once all of the charter boats exited the harbor around 10 AM, MJ Sailing crew hoisted their sails – a Code Zero and Main Sail – while following other vessels for safety.

Sailing Performance at 75% of Wind Speed

With Terry helming, the crew sailed out on their first adventure. Achieving speeds close to the wind and boat speed ranging from 9-11 knots in winds between 11-13 knots was an excellent test for them.

Regenerating Electricity at 21 Amps

Notably, the catamaran’s innovative technology also allowed them to regenerate electricity at up to 21 amps during their sailing. This performance showcased how efficient regenerative technology could enhance a sailor’s experience.

Tacking and Testing Sails

Aft changing course, the team tried various sail combinations to test each part of their gear in diverse conditions. Despite initially being unsure how everything would perform under challenging circumstances, their boat held up admirably.

Navigating Pattaya’s Waters

The beautiful yet protected Bay offered ample room to test different sails – particularly their Code 65, which works best between 60-75 degrees off the apparent wind. This proved perfect for sailing at light winds while covering distance effectively.

Lunch and Another Tack

After lunch, the team enjoyed swapping the Code 65 for their Genoa sail with improved pointing capabilities. Following another successful tack back toward the harbor, it became clear that sailing in such a high-performing boat offered an incredible experience.

Falling In Love With Sailing Again

The crew returned to the docks, feeling accomplished after their 3.5-hour sailing adventure. They emphasized how much this experience rekindled their love for sailing and cemented the hard work they were doing on their own build project.

A Day to Remember

In conclusion, their time spent sailing Max One in Pattaya, Thailand was unforgettable. They had put their boat through various tests while enjoying stunning scenery and exploring different sail combinations.

This journey provided invaluable insights into what the future holds as they progress on their dream of building a similar high-performance catamaran for themselves.

We're back to bring you the second half of our time in SE Asia, and this time, instead of looking at boats in the factory, we actually get to spend a few days sailing one!!

Matt and I were super excited when Terry's invitation to come out and visit also included a side trip over to Pattaya Thailand to spend a few days aboard his Max Cruise 44, 'Max One'. Since there are strict laws against boats sailing in Vietnam, this is where the deliveries are made of the Max Cruise yachts, and is a great training ground for the new owners learning to sail them. And as 'soon to be' owners ourselves, we jumped at the chance to get on Terry's boat for some practice.

We'd only have two days on the water before our flight back, so we needed to make the most of them. The grounds outside of the Ocean Marina Resort are fairly protected, and at this time of year, winds are a steady 10-15 knots. This was great for us, as one of the large reasons for us choosing the Max Cruise is its light wind sailing capabilities.

In the next two days we'd try out different points of sail with the Code 65, the genoa, and also the spinnaker.

Day one had us starting with the Code 65, and even through winds of 11-13 knots, our boat speed was usually between 9-11 knots, which we were incredibly happy with. And on top of that, we were regenerating power at 15-19 amps!!

Switching over to the genoa, a smaller headsail, we worked on pointing capabilities, and tried to keep ourselves as close to the wind as we could, just to see what kinds of speeds we could achieve. Holding a course of 45 degrees to the apparent wind angle, we were still sailing comfortably along at 10-11 knots in 13-14 knots of wind.

Terry's boat has mini keels, so when our boat is completed with its dagger boards and different sails, the two of us should be able to point even higher into the wind.

With one day of sailing down, we were extremely happy with the speeds we were achieving, and the ease in which the two of us should be able to handle this boat by ourselves.

One more day on the water to see how she does with the spinnaker. Stay tuned next week to find out!

We hope you enjoy!
