Enhancing Access To Our Winches (MJ Sailing - Ep 322)

In our helm station we have built a custom underside panel which will give us easy access to service our winches.

This week we make a big visual impact within our cockpit and helm area by bonding in the underside of our helm area (which will give us easy access to our winches) as well as line and general storage space next to our steps.

The components for these have been partially assembled over the past few weeks, with gelcoat added to the areas which we will not have easy access to once they are in place.

One new addition though, based on some comments from last week's video, is an access point to the sliding door pocket, through the base of our storage unit. After Matt cuts a hole into the area, I test out if I can still get to the track for our sliding door, and thankfully I can still reach back far enough to work the furthest screws.

Then it's time to bond these pieces in place! After laying down a little bit of our thickened resin on some of the edges, Matt coats the new additions in our quickly curing methacrylate and we slide them into place and quickly add clamps to keep them there while the adhesive cures.

Matt added a little thickened resin to the aft edges of the storage area and we let the sections cure overnight.

The next morning Matt went through with our router to round the edges and make sure they're not too sharp for any future run-ins. The exterior was glassed and finished off with peel ply.

Since temperatures were so hot (90/32), later that same day Matt was able to pull off the peel ply, do measurements of the interior seams, and glass those in as well.

Over this next week we'll begin fairing these newly glassed areas and getting them ready for paint!

We hope you enjoy!

Enhancing Access To Our Winches | MJ Sailing – Ep 322

In this episode of MJ Sailing, Mark and Mandy tackle the issue of accessing their winches on their sailing boat. They have to create a custom hatch and door for improved functionality and design.

One of the good ideas suggested in the comments last week was making an axle hatch in this area, although it doesn’t need to be huge. Mark decided to make a hole of about 6 inches using a large hole saw, but it takes some work on this foam surface.

Process Of Creating Custom Hatch And Door

To prep the area for the new hatch and door, they sand all surfaces with 80 grit sandpaper. Then, they vacuum out any extra dust or debris as the methacrylate adhesive is prone to squeeze out due to overfilling.

They also need to ensure there’s enough clearance for their door and avoid anything sticking out that might impact the sliding. To cut the area, Mark drills it out and fills it in with gel coat after smoothing everything out.

Bonding The Helm Station

Once the surfaces are prepped, they bond their Helm station and storage space together using a two-part methacrylate adhesive. They ensure that all areas to be bonded have tape around them so no excess adhesive dries in unwanted places.

Glassing And Fairing

They let the methacrylate cure before starting on glassing. The exterior parts are then rounded over and sanded to get rid of sharp edges. Mandy sands everything down after Mark peels off the peel ply.

Results

The process has left them with a new hatch and door for improved access to their winches. The design works perfectly, and they’ve avoided any obstructions from impacting the door sliding mechanism.

This innovation in boat functionality is a testament to MJ Sailing’s commitment to creating solutions that make sailing easier and more enjoyable. Their dedication to customizing and maintaining their vessel pays off with seamless and convenient features like these!

Next Steps

In future episodes, we can expect Mark and Mandy to continue refining their sailing boat’s interior. They’ll glass the inside spaces as they did the outside for consistency and balance.

If you want to follow along with their adventures or are looking for similar tips on upgrading your own vessel, be sure to check out their channel. Their wealth of knowledge in marine engineering will no doubt come in handy!
