17 | Exploring the Islands of Fiji, Vanua Levu and Taveuni

After the two week ocean passage to Fiji, we settle in to the little town of Savusavu. The boat needed some repairs after the long crossing, and then we explore the many wonders of Fiji, from waterfalls and sugar cane to chocolate and kava root. Setting sail for Viani Bay, we had a rough upwind bash, but eventually made it on the second try. We found a dive resort with free moorings on Taveuni, and enjoyed the easy life for a few days. After restocking with fresh produce, we set out on the overnight sail to the beautiful Lau group.

Julia is an Atkin designed Ingrid ketch, built in 1960 in British Columbia. She is a traditionally built wooden boat, fir planking on oak frames.

We set out from New Caledonia to cover the final stretch of water before we will have truly sailed across the entire Pacific Ocean. Conditions were a bit rough, with 20-30 knots and 3m swells directly on the beam most of the way. The stiff breeze meant fas...

20 | Crossing the Western Pacific on a Wooden Boat
We set out on an ocean passage across the western pacific from Fiji to New Caledonia, about 700 nautical miles. This passage had some great sailing, and some scary moments as a severe squall passed over us in the night and kept the boat pinned down on her ...

Setting sail in our classic wooden boat, we cross nearly the entire breadth of Fiji to cruise in the Yasawa Islands. Leaving the lush forested island of Makogai, we sail the famous Bligh Waters to the drier leeward side of the Island group. In the Yasawa a...

18 | Sailing the Remote Islands of Fiji, Vanua Balavu and Makogai
We sailied Julia upwind to Fiji's remote Lau group, and were rewarded with one of the most spectacular cruising grounds we have ever visited. Vanua Balavu's Bay of Islands is filled with beautiful islets with perfectly calm anchorages and countless coves t...
