We have crossed the border to cruise the rugged and beautiful outside coast of Mexico’s Baja Penninsula. From the large city of Ensenada, to the extremely remote Islas San Benito we found many stunning vistas, rich wildlife, and excellent sailing. A perfect weather window allowed us to make the last leg into Cabo San Lucas in one long sail from the little village of Abreojos. An ocean passage that began in the frigid waters of San Diego ended in the bathwater warm tropics of the entrance to the Sea of Cortez.
Julia is a traditional wooden boat. She was built of cedar, fir, and oak in Desolation Sound in 1960 to Atkin’s Ingrid design. She is out to prove that classic yachts are well suited to bluewater cruising, and to have lots of excellent sailing along the way!
The home built windvane was made to a design by Bill Belcher in his book Wind-Vane Self Steering.
