Systems Going in at last // How To Build A Fibreglass Catamaran EP321

Could it be possible, I am finally getting to the fun bit!!! The Catamaran Systems are finally starting to be installed. Up till now , it has been all about construction, building and modifying, but now it is time t start the long haul of installation. This week I start on the exhaust system to ready the boat for an engine start up.

Our YouTube build series is all about what it takes to build a Catamaran from Scratch. There is so much detail in a build of this size and so many different techniques involved in bringing her to fruition. I trust you will find something that may help with your current or future project, repair or dream boat build. If you feel there is value, please let us know and comment so we can continue to produce content worth your valuable time.

Everyone, welcome back to Life On The Hulls! In today’s episode, we dive deep into another exciting segment of building our fibreglass catamaran. This week marks a major milestone in our project as we move forward with installing essential components such as our exhaust system and its gooseneck mufflers.

Exhaust System Installation

Our build process involves several concurrent projects, but our primary focus lately has been on the B hull’s engine installation and exhaust system. The past few months have seen considerable progress across all aspects of the project, but today we zero in on this intricate part – the gooseneck muffler and related exhaust fittings.

Choosing the Exhaust Components

In the earlier stages of boat building, we planned to replicate our aluminium gunnel rail shape with custom-made bow caps created by a colleague named Janet. However, upon further consideration and work efficiency, we opted for laminating the bows on both sides – a process which connects the Holland deck while providing us with a smooth, modern look.

Tackling Bow Fairing

With such an extensive project like fairing our catamaran’s bow on both sides, it involves considerable effort. Our team has dedicated significant time over several weeks to achieve this sleek finish, resulting in a white, smooth surface that complements the rest of our design perfectly.

Installing the Gooseneck Muffler

To install our exhaust system correctly, we purchased a gooseneck muffler that fits directly into our catamaran’s hull extension. Properly placing and routing our 75 mm hose from this central point is essential for ensuring our boat operates smoothly with minimal noise.

Fuel Systems Enhancements

While we focus on the exhaust system, let’s not forget that safety and efficiency should never take a back seat. That’s why we’ve recently bought fuel splash tops – essential in preventing accidental spills and leaks that often occur during refueling. Our plan to install these safety measures is as crucial as our current progress on the engine systems.

Understanding The Exhaust Hose Configuration

We have gone through multiple iterations to configure our exhaust hose best. It is a rigid, 75 mm hose that required meticulous planning for installation in tight areas without compromising storage space and accessibility within the boat’s compartments.

Making Necessary Adjustments

In dealing with potential vibration from the installed exhaust system, we have had to improvise some solutions along the way. These modifications ensure that our gooseneck muffler sits securely in place and operates effectively without causing any noise disturbances.

Maintaining Neat Installments

In ensuring a clean, efficient setup throughout the project, our team decided that mounting the exhaust facing upwards and against the starboard side bulkhead would offer better storage options without disrupting access to other boat systems.

Creating Waterproof Seals

In our effort to maintain watertight seals, we have employed various techniques such as using C-Flex and 5200 sealants. These ensure that the crucial crash bulkhead at the back remains intact, even in harsh conditions.

Zach’s Departure

As we progress with our build and tackle this exhaustive task list, a significant change looms on the horizon – the departure of our team member Zach. Before he embarks on a new chapter in his life, moving to Tasmania, both he and I intend to get our engines started for one last time.

Next Steps

In upcoming episodes, you can expect updates on the finalization of the exhaust system as well as further exploration into our fuel safety systems. We’ll also discuss some additional modifications and upgrades we plan to implement in our catamaran design.

Stay Tuned

As we steadily progress on this ambitious project, don’t forget to share your thoughts and questions in the comments below. We’re always happy to hear from our dedicated audience!
