I thought I had better spend a bit of time specking out some of the outfitting of a 40 ft catamaran well in advance so Janet and I spent
a few days in and on the Cats on display at the Sydney International Boat Show. Here I could pull up the soles of the cabins and check out the plumbing, the attachment points for headlinings and electrical looms so I could work out a general lie of the land for our boat. Of particular note at these shows is the lack of interest in such things by the general public, only interested in the colour of the cushions and sails, and whether it was galley up or down. What is evident in these production boats is a need to satisfy the live aboard trend and luxury items tend to push these boats to weights that will be costly to run, and possibly hard to sail. I have seen features in all production boats that appeal to my build and I hope to incorporate some of these in our boat.
In general the quality of manufacture is amazing and the finish superb, however there are many areas inside service areas that could have been refined, although not critical with the pricetag that these things carry, detail is everything.
Cheers Rossco
