How to Build a Catamaran – Finishing Touches

This week on Life On The Hulls, we’re stepping up our game with some serious woodwork. Joining us in the boat-building frenzy are my little brother Brett and my brother-in-law Jimmy, who will help me finish the boat (fingers crossed!).Our dedicated team member, Janet, has been working on our robes and has just completed all the wood surrounds. We’re now moving onto the bulkheads, cabinets, and other areas that need some extra love to make them look pretty.

Woodwork Chaos

The Tasmanian oak laminate has been purchased, and it’s my job to cut it and glue it in place. To achieve the perfect finish without any chipping or damage, I’ve decided to use a 50mm thick piece of foam as my cutting bed. This technique allows me to avoid distortion while working on these intricate pieces.

Cutting with Precision

I carefully cut out templates from the laminate, ensuring a smooth edge that won’t chip or fray when in use. Each piece is meticulously measured and prepared before being epoxied into place for later trimming.

Joining Forces

My brother Brett and Jimmy join us to help complete the bulkheads, cabinets, and other wooden fixtures, making great progress as we continue to perfect our craft. Each piece is sanded down and sealed with a coat of benchtop clear, an acrylic polyurethane that gives it a lovely shine and protects the wood from moisture damage.

Team Effort

The boat is slowly taking shape as we work together on each piece, sanding and polishing until it gleams. Brett’s patience finally pays off when he uses his multi-tool for perfect results, proving once again the value of perseverance and hard work.

Blowing Away Challenges

As we complete each task with a meticulous eye for detail, Janet makes sure everything fits together perfectly before moving on to the next stage of construction. Despite small setbacks and moments of frustration, our determination prevails as we continue our quest to build the ultimate catamaran.

Conclusion

In this episode, we’ve made great progress on the finishing touches for our luxurious catamaran. With the help of family and dedication to excellence in craftsmanship, we’re able to achieve a stunning wooden finish that makes all the hard work worthwhile. Don’t miss out on next week’s installment where we’ll continue refining this amazing vessel with more exciting boat-building secrets!
It's not often I get help in this build as it has pretty much been an immediate family build, but when the boys arrive , things get busy and lots of work gets done in a small amount of time. "Let's step it up a notch".
