Ho Chi Minh City - a Vietnam holiday with our parents! (Sailing Dakini - Leave to Roam Ep. 103)
At the end of our season 2025 sailing season we flew home via Vietnam. We met Al's parents in Ho Chi Minh City for a three week holiday. We have spent a lot of time in this wonderful country, showing family around as well, and this is something we have been looking forward to for a while.
Both Pat and Peter have spent significant time in Asia as far back as the 60s, love the food environment, and people, but Vietnam was new to both of them. We were really hoping this would be another great adventure to add to their collection. We were not disappointed. We start in Ho Chi Minh City for food, museums, and a little flooding.

Al, from New Zealand and Kel from Australia met through work in 2010 and have been together ever since. Always infected by the travel bug they finally decided to head off on an adventure and started with Vietnam and Laos before heading to Sri Lanka, India, then Cambodia and Indonesia. Their mission is to explore as many off the beaten track places as possible through a slow travel philosophy on a tight budget.
UPDATE!!! After a few years of saving (thanks Covid) they finally did it. They now own DAKINI, a gorgeous Lagoon 421, and are (re) learning to sail while exploring the Mediterranean.

Leave to Roam
We are Kel and Al, a couple from New Zealand and Australia who have always had a passion for travel. In January 2018 we left our full time jobs and started to travel the world. We spent two years travelling on a budget through South East Asia documenting our adventures as we went before we found a new dream, to buy a boat! Fours years of hard work scrimping and saving led us to our dream. We introduce you to our home Dakini. She is a 2010 Lagoon 421 and we love her. Purchased in Greece we started our adventure cruising the greek islands. Two years later we have sailed all over Greece, Italy, Turkey and Malta with a winter in Tunisia. Our plan for 2026 is to explore Albania, Italy, Malta, France and Spain before the biggest adventure of our lives, crossing the Atlantic around New Years. Exciting times ahead.
