A TASTE OF AFRICA IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN

Welcome to Cape Verde, located off the northwest coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. We’ve just arrived here after sailing around 800 nautical miles from the Canary Islands. Hang on, my first ever landfall! Sleep deprivation is getting to me. Here we plan to spend around 5 days before sailing the final leg of the Atlantic Crossing. For now, recovering, socializing, exploring, and preparing are on the agenda.

LIVING THE BOAT LIFE

As soon as we arrived, we kicked back with our buddies on Q’Oi for a post-passage celebration. We tried making fish tacos for the first time ever, both of us having no idea how to cook fish. Mmmm…those tacos were the beast!

THE EASIEST SIX DAYS EVER

The easiest six days ever? We reckon so! The crew on our boat made it a breeze with their easy-going attitudes and exceptional skills.

WELCOME TO CAPE VERDE

Cape Verde, an archipelago consisting of 10 volcanic islands, boasts a remarkable diversity of landscapes. Despite their small size, the islands range from barren volcanic terrain to lush valleys and tropical forests.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CAPE VERDE

Initially discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century during the Age of Exploration, they established settlements and introduced agriculture such as sugar cane and maize. Sadly, Cape Verde played a significant role in the transatlantic slave trade from the 16th to 19th centuries.

CAPE VERDE’S INDEPENDENCE

Cape Verde gained independence from Portugal in 1975 after a protracted struggle for self-determination. Since gaining independence, the country has made significant strides in economic development, education, and healthcare, becoming one of Africa’s success stories.

AN ADVENTUROUS DAY

We ventured out at night to check out some jazz bars. We also went on a local adventure where we spotted sea turtles, making for an exciting and memorable day in Cape Verde!

PREPAREDNESS AND WEATHER CONCERNS

While we prepared for our departure from Cape Verde, we discussed concerns regarding our passage across the Atlantic. The potential weather challenges weighed on our minds as we tried to remain positive and focused on a successful voyage.

RECHARGING BATTERIES AND GROCERY SHOPPING

We ventured into town for a delicious Vietnamese banh mi sandwich, the perfect pre-departure lunch. We stocked up on fresh fruits and vegetables to replenish our supplies before setting sail on the final leg of our journey.

Join us next week as we embark on an unforgettable 2,000 nautical mile crossing from Cape Verde across the Atlantic Ocean! It’s going to be a wild ride!
