The Journey of Building Our Hobie 16 Catamaran
Introduction to Our Hobie 16 Project
Building a Hobie 16 catamaran was an exciting adventure driven by creativity and teamwork. We chose the Hobie 16 for its fully closed platform design, which allows removal of the hull while still providing a stable working surface. Our journey began when we discovered old hulls belonging to the club, tangled in brambles and too worn for serious use, along with spare parts. These hulls were rightfully the club’s property, ensuring our project was both ethical and sustainable.

Overcoming Challenges in Construction
One major challenge was how to keep the mast upright without relying on the hull or shrouds in windy conditions. After much brainstorming, we created a solution using a twisted Hobie 16 boom lashed to the platform. This setup provided the necessary support and strength. To further reinforce the design, we attached a broken Laser Bug mast to the boom, enabling it to handle lateral forces effectively.

Next, we had to devise a steering system since we were without a second hull or rudder. We crafted a sturdy steering mechanism by sleeving a Hobie stick with a long aluminum tube, puncturing the end to attach our rudder. This innovative approach ensured we could navigate our unique catamaran.

Weather Challenges Affecting Our Plans
Despite our resourceful use of materials, we faced significant weather challenges during our building process. The unpredictable summer weather in France, filled with frequent rain, frequently disrupted our efforts and left us waiting for favorable winds. Once we completed the boat, we had to be patient and wait over a week for optimal conditions to properly test our creation.

The Big Day of Testing
Finally, the big day of testing arrived after weeks of anticipation. We rigged the Hobie 16, making final adjustments. As we walked down to the beach, our unusual creation attracted attention from the crowds enjoying the beautiful weather. We arranged for a Zodiac to assist with our return journey, while friends prepared in other boats to capture the moment. Our managers watched from a nearby hill, eager to witness the results of our efforts.

Trial Runs and Learning from Mistakes
We organized our team for the test run, with me helming from the windward side and my friend Théo stationed on the leeward side for stabilization.

First Attempt
As I perched on the edge of the platform, we detached from the Zodiac, and the boat began to lift. Realizing how quickly we were rising, I aimed for the trapeze but lost focus and capsized.

Second Attempt
Undeterred, we regrouped for another attempt. I launched already on the trapeze, stretched on the Zodiac’s inflatable side. We picked up speed, but the mainsheet caught in the Zodiac’s cleat, leading to another capsize.

Third Attempt: Achieving Success
Determined to succeed, we changed our approach again. This time, I set off alone, trapezing while a friend ensured nothing snagged. Finally, I experienced success! Balancing without a windward hull was challenging, requiring immense effort to maintain stability in gusty winds.

As the boat lifted dramatically, I had to carefully manage the mainsheet to avoid capsizing again. Despite muscle fatigue, I was committed to keeping the boat upright. Unfortunately, in a moment of exhaustion, I capsized once more, but every attempt enriched our learning experience.
