Nacra Evolution SUV – The F18 for Real Sailors?

Do you REALLY need a decksweeper mainsail on a modern Formula 18 catamaran?

Today we're sailing the Nacra Evolution in what I'm calling the "Sports Utility" F18 configuration — with a custom non-decksweeper mainsail and shortened daggerboards.

But how much performance do you actually give away?

James Henderson joins me onboard as we put the Evolution through its paces around Vasiliki Bay, with plenty of fast upwind sailing, spinnaker runs and some seriously quick reaching.

Along the way James shares some excellent F18 sailing tips on mainsail trim, Cunningham, mast setup, daggerboard position, keeping the boat moving through the lulls and getting the most from the boat downwind.

Most importantly, we look at what you actually gain from ditching the decksweeper — easier movement around the boat, better visibility and a much less intimidating F18 experience — and whether there's a noticeable performance penalty.

If you love fast catamaran sailing, Formula 18s or simply want to make your boat easier and more enjoyable to sail, this one's for you.

Boat: Nacra Evolution F18
Location: Vasiliki Bay, Lefkada, Greece
