Can New Sails Make a Hobie 16 Faster?

Whirlwind Super R sails on a Hobie 16... but do they actually make the boat faster?

In this video I take my Hobie 16 out for the first time with a custom set of black Whirlwind Super R sails and put them to the test with a series of speed runs in Vasiliki, Greece. Solo first, then with One Shoe Phil on board. Let's see what they've got.

The Whirlwind Super R sails feature a more modern sail shape, a flatter profile and a square-top style design aimed at improving efficiency and performance compared with a standard Hobie 16 sail plan.

This wasn't a scientific test. Just first impressions, speed runs, sail tuning, and seeing how the boat feels with these striking new sails out on the water.

A huge thanks to Whirlwind Sails for producing these custom sails.

If you've sailed with Super R sails, let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
