A period of southerly winds is on tap, bringing with it the infamous Miami heat (and humidity). But that also means good sailing weather for heading north to the Chesapeake Bay. First, however, we need to work our way out of the Old Florida Channel, and with east-to-southeast winds that means a two mile long tacking drill dead up wind.
Our first full day at sea turns out to be Saturday, June 1, which is the official start of the hurricane season and wouldn’t you know there’s an area of low pressure down in the Gulf of Mexico with a 30% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone. Nice. The only weather we need to contend with is a cold front coming off the east coast early the following week, which will bring brisk northeasterly winds, prompting me to exit the favorable Gulf Stream current.
