Is the Sunshine State Throwing Shade on Cruisers? | Ep. 255

Are Florida’s coastal cities throwing shade on liveaboard cruisers? The answer appears to be a resounding yes as tensions continue to escalate between the liveaboard cruising community and city officials in Florida, particularly in Miami Beach. In this article, we’ll explore the ongoing battle over water rights, public marinas, environmental concerns, and what lies ahead for this group of freedom-loving sailors.

Sailing into Trouble

Since the pandemic began in 2020, Florida’s coastline has seen a massive influx of liveaboard cruisers, as people sought alternative living arrangements while working remotely. As this community grew, so did the conflict with city officials over water rights and environmental concerns.

The Environmental Debate

City officials argue that these liveaboard cruisers are harming the environment by polluting waterways with waste and damaging seagrass beds through reckless mooring. Miami Beach Commissioner Joe Suarez has made cracking down on this community his top priority.

In February 2024, Miami Beach conducted marine inspections of the area’s anchored vessels. Despite expecting to find widespread damage, divers reported only two boats spewing waste and impacting the bay bottom. Out of 66 vessels inspected, five violations were issued for improper mooring; however, no damage to seagrass was observed.

Citizens Speak Up

The community of liveaboard cruisers in Miami Beach is fighting back against these efforts, citing a violation of their right to anchor freely and voice their concerns. They argue that they pay for services like water and have a right to use public spaces without excessive regulation.

Alternatives to Anchoring

In light of the ongoing debate, Miami Beach is considering constructing a regulated mooring field for 147 vessels of various sizes. This proposed solution would not cater specifically to liveaboard cruisers, leading some boaters to worry that it further restricts their access to coastal spaces.

The Future of Florida’s Waterways

The conflict between city officials and liveaboard cruisers in Miami Beach is just one example of an ongoing struggle throughout the Sunshine State. As both sides continue to push their agendas, we must remember that these discussions ultimately affect everyone’s freedom to enjoy Florida’s magnificent waterways.

A Final Plea for Freedom

In a world full of rules and restrictions, many liveaboard cruisers have worked tirelessly to earn their ocean-sailing dreams. Their pursuit of freedom is a testament to the human spirit’s desire to roam far beyond land-based boundaries.

I make my way to Key West, Florida. I notice that shore access is getting rather more tricky if you are not at a marina. When I applied for a dinghy pass at Marathon they would not issue the pass until they checked that my USCG documentation was legit. Evidently the authorities are cracking down on cruisers, but to what end?
