In and Out of Beaufort Under Sail; to Cape Hatteras | Ep. 259

Sailing Into Beaufort – A Test of Skills and Determination

The experienced sailor braves the challenging currents and intricate waters of Beaufort Inlet, navigating through strong tidal flows and showcasing impressive seamanship skills. The journey into Taylor Creek proves to be a test of patience and precision, as the skilled mariner skillfully maneuvers the vessel through the tricky entrance and finds suitable anchorage off both Ford docks and Taylor Creek.

Despite the daunting conditions, the sailor remains undeterred and takes advantage of the increasing wind for an exhilarating sail. With a keen eye on the forecast and a firm grasp on navigation techniques, the expert sailor prepares for an epic voyage from Cape Lookout to Virginia via Diamond Shoals and Cape Hatteras.

Weathering the Storm

The journey begins with a favorable weather window that presents moderate Northeast winds at 12-13 knots. However, as the vessel approaches Cape Lookout Bight, it becomes clear that the conditions have yet to settle, resulting in choppy swells and challenging sailboat maneuverability.

To mitigate potential dangers, the sailor decides to wait for calmer weather before proceeding further into the bight. As the winds begin to ease up, the sailor reflects on the importance of careful planning and adaptability in the face of adversity. This experience teaches valuable lessons about respecting the ocean’s moods and making prudent decisions for both safety and efficiency.

Charting a Course

With an optimistic outlook fueled by accurate weather forecasting, the sailor sets a course to Virginia, aiming for Diamond Shoals as the first milestone. The passage plan involves navigating through a shipping lane and optimizing sailing angles based on prevailing wind conditions. By positioning the vessel for a broad reach with winds aft of the beam, the expert mariner ensures efficient progress towards the mouth of the bay.

To maintain optimal speed and minimize resistance, the sailor takes advantage of the favorable Code Zero sail configuration, accompanied by a full mainsail. The crew works together to keep the vessel on course and responds promptly to changing conditions. This approach yields significant results as the miles are quickly logged on the voyage towards Virginia.

Conclusion

In conclusion, this sailing journey from Beaufort to Cape Hatteras is a testament to the determination and skill of the experienced sailor. By navigating treacherous waters with finesse and preparing for challenging conditions, the sailor sets an inspiring example for fellow adventurers.

The wise choice of timing, along with a thorough understanding of local currents, winds, and navigation techniques, leads to a successful voyage under sail. As the sun sets on this remarkable journey, we reflect on the lessons learned and eagerly anticipate further exploits in the world of sailing.

I find myself racing into Beaufort ahead of an approaching southerly gale. At least the wind is fair for negotiating this rather tricky entrance, at least for a straight sailboat it is. Once the gale has cleared I use the following northwest wind to sail back out to the Cape Lookout Bight. From there I continue on toward Cape Hatteras and the Chesapeake Bay.
