On Boxing Day, December 26th, we are approximately at 28°N and 73°20’W, leaving us with about 275 miles to the Berry Islands in the Bahamas. Things have calmed down quite a bit since the rough weather of the past few days, which allowed me to finally get some decent sleep last night. I am feeling much better rested today, thanks to that break in the continuous rocking and rolling of my boat.
We are making great progress overall, but we do have some challenging weather to face. We are expecting a cold front later tomorrow that will bring winds of up to 20 knots from the Southwest. With that in mind, I’ve decided to put away my Code Zero sail at the end of today and bag it until the squalls pass.
After the cold front, we can expect the wind to shift from Southwest to Northwest. Following that, my weather router has advised me to sail North, so I am currently on a course heading due West towards the Berry Islands. As the wind shifts to the rear of us, our course will change accordingly and take us smoothly into the islands.
With another series of cold fronts coming in, bringing strong Northwest winds with them, I may need to find shelter within the Berry Islands for at least 5 days before attempting to cross the Gulf Stream and head to Florida. That would make my layover a bit longer than usual, but I prefer not to risk braving the rough seas.
I’ve received news that my 88-year-old father is in hospice care, and his condition is critical. This emotional strain has taken a toll on me as I’m navigating the open seas, making this journey even more challenging for me personally.
The news of my dad’s deteriorating health has made the emotional burden even heavier, as I am facing these challenges on this solo sailing trip from Bermuda to the Bahamas. As much as I want to continue with my original plan and complete this leg of my journey, I am struggling with the thought of being away from home amidst all this.
In light of the potential changes in weather, I am considering sheltering in place within the Bahamas for a while, as I don’t want to take unnecessary risks and jeopardize my progress. It will give me some time to reflect on things back home and process these emotional trials during this difficult period.
If the forecast holds up, I plan to use a window of easterlies turning into Southeast winds to cross the bank and get back to Florida within 4-5 days of sheltering in the Bahamas. As we sail on, I hope that the wind remains fair, and the seas gentle enough to maintain my progress towards Miami or Marathon in Florida.

Mixed but generally improving sailing conditions have me well on my way to the Berry Islands, Bahamas, where I will most likely anchor while I wait for favorable winds to cross the Gulf Stream to Florida. So all is well at sea, except that I receive word that my father is in critical condition and has been moved into hospice care.
