Managing Power On the Seawind 1600 Catamaran | Harbors Unknown Ep. 7
Power! Fighter jets are a perfect example of how much energy is created from fossil fuel especially when the supply is unlimited. But how do you manage power on a boat when the inputs are limited by the sun, wind, batteries and the fuel stored on board? The energy system on the #Seawind1600 is quite complex. #Seawind was very helpful, specifically Shane Grover, in educating us about the different configurations, ultimately helping us decide which system we thought would work best for us.
Shane from Seawind joined us this week to discuss what Seawind takes into consideration when designing the energy system for the Seawind 1600 #catamaran.
The first step in designing the boat’s #energysystem is understanding your onboard consumers and consumption habits in different scenarios (at anchor, passage making, island cruising). What appliances you use and for how long. Things like the microwave, oven, washing machine, air conditioning, etc. The high consumption items we have on board are a washing machine, air conditioning, and a combination microwave oven.
Then you consider the power generating options, like solar panels, the alternators, generator, sea hydrogenerator and wind generator. We have (2) 80 HP #Yanmar engines with the upgraded 120 amp alternator, four 265w solar panels for a total of 1065w + additional MPPT controller, a #FischerPanda 10000i #generator, a 2500w #Mastervolt Inverter/Charger and 150 amp Mastervolt Alternators.
After that you think about the storage options; #AGMbatteries and #lithiumbatteries. We selected the 720AH lithium batteries.
So far we are very happy with our selections, especially the decision to install the lithium batteries instead of AGM.
