Dev and Spandana: Sailing the World with “Turtle”

Meet Dev and Spandana, a remarkable couple who traded their stable lives for a grand adventure: circumnavigating the globe on their cherished sailboat, “Turtle,” a 1993 Caliber with a storied past of seven previous owners and even a salvage mission.

Dev and Spandana: The Journey Begins

Dev, a New York City native, boasts over two decades of experience as a software engineer. Spandana, originally from South India, moved to New York at age 11, embarking on a career as a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician. At the age of 13, they first crossed paths, and after more than a decade of friendship, they tied the knot in 2013.

A Love Story for the Ages

Dev and Spandana’s love story is equally captivating. They first crossed paths in 7th grade when Spandana offered Dev a piece of lemon cake in Spanish class, sparking an immediate friendship. Their middle school romance was short-lived, but their friendship rebuilt during high school. After parting ways for college and dating other people, they reconnected in 2012.

In a whirlwind six months, they were married, with a memorable city hall ceremony that took place while Spandana was on a night shift in the NICU, having only an hour of sleep. Their journey from acquaintances to friends to a loving couple is a testament to their enduring bond.

A Meandering Path to Sailing

Their journey to sailing the high seas was far from straightforward. After their marriage, they embarked on a global journey, exploring destinations like Wales, Scotland, Japan, France, and many more. Their shared passion for scuba diving took them to a dive resort, which became an annual tradition for Dev’s birthday.

However, it was a chance encounter with a divemaster during their fifth consecutive visit that ignited their adventurous spirit. The divemaster encouraged them to explore new horizons, sparking the idea of a grand two-year backpacking adventure around the world.

In January 2020, they were ready to say goodbye to their jobs, booking flights and accommodations for their globe-trotting escapade. Unfortunately, the onset of a global pandemic thwarted their plans. Faced with a choice to either wait for the situation to improve or adapt their dreams, they chose the latter.

Sailing: A New Chapter Begins

Their journey took another turn when they discovered the YouTube channel “Gone With The Wynns,” which introduced them to the world of sailing. By September, they were taking their ASA 101 course, and by January 2021, they began the search for their own sailboat.

In April 2021, they bought “Turtle,” an endeavor that unfolded just eight months after their first sailing lesson. Now, they are on a new voyage, pursuing their dreams with “Turtle” as their trusted companion.

Turtle’s Voyage: The Caliber 40

Turtle, the faithful companion of Dev and Spandana, is not just a boat; she’s a 40-foot 1993 Caliber, a sailing vessel with a history all her own. With a 5-foot 5-inch full integrated keel, skeg-mounted rudder, and a cutter rig, Turtle is a remarkable vessel.

Caliber sailboats, which ceased production in 2010, were built in Clearwater, Florida, from 1979 to 2010. These boats are known for their unique design and build. George McCreary, the co-founder of Caliber, is still actively involved as a broker, and his extensive knowledge about these beautiful vessels is invaluable. A vibrant Caliber community thrives on Facebook, offering support and camaraderie for Caliber enthusiasts.

Turtle’s Personal Touches

To make Turtle a true home on the water, Dev and Spandana have added various enhancements and personalized touches, both small and significant:

Power Upgrade

Turtle’s power system received a substantial upgrade with six 100Ah Relion Lithium FePO4 batteries. Additionally, a mix of flexible and rigid solar panels now blankets the deck, boasting a total capacity of 970 Watts.

Galley Enhancement

Dev and Spandana took on the galley, removing the nav station to make way for new countertops and storage. They’ve also introduced a 75-liter Dometic freezer, revamped the countertops with epoxy marble, and upgraded to a Kohler Neoroc composite sink.

Freshwater Revamp

The couple installed a Seawater Pro reverse osmosis system and overhauled the entire freshwater plumbing system with PEX tubing and Aqualock push-to-connect and manifold fittings.

Salon Makeover

Dev and Spandana replaced all the cushions in the salon area with brand new Sunbrella cushions. They also added a 27-inch monitor to the wall and removed the table’s fiddles to achieve a sleeker look.

Berth Transformation

They upgraded Turtle’s forward berth by adding a new 4-inch firm foam mattress topped with 3 inches of latex and an additional 2-inch gel memory foam layer, all within a mattress enclosure. They also installed a laptop stand at the foot of the bed, added shelves to the hanging locker, and securely positioned a washing machine in the cabin.

Head Evolution

The forward head received a deluxe upgrade with a Raritan Elegance toilet, complete with a freshwater bidet.

Deck Enhancements

To ensure a smooth voyage, they enhanced the deck by adding two Mantus BR2 bow rollers and securing a 33Kg Rocna anchor with 300 feet of fresh chain.

These transformations have not only rendered Turtle a seaworthy vessel but have also turned it into a comfortable and personalized home for Dev and Spandana’s grand adventure, guaranteeing that they enjoy the world’s wonders in style and comfort.

Medical Mondays: Navigating Health on the High Seas
