We’ve been sailing in the tropics since 2013 and reckon the most significant hazard to cruising is the weather. Tropical storms, squalls, and unpredictable winds make navigation challenging.
The weather is divided north of the equator into three main periods: the northeast monsoon; the southwest monsoon; and the transitional periods, when winds are either erratic or non-existent.
As we approached the equator, we discovered that navigating the unforgiving northern coastline of Sulawesi during the transitional period did not mean an easy journey…
