Our sailing story has taken us to this Indonesian community, living in wooden stilted houses over sand and coral. Could this be the perfect way to live?
We get to know the people of Anambas in this episode, meeting the inhabitants of Letong as we travel around Jemaja by scooter. The kids here are learning English and were keen to practise on us. With our translate app, we made ourselves understood…sort of.
There isn’t much room when you’re living in a stilt house,sandwiched between rainforest slopes and the sea, but the people rub along together in small, simply-furnished homes and shops. Mostly they walk, but some ride motorbikes over the rickety pontoons.
If you enjoy fish and seafood, the Anambas is the place to come. In a restaurant in Letong, we had the best ‘cumi cumi’ (squid) we have ever tasted!
