The last thing you need is engine failure in a storm when you are sailing through pirate waters to Turtle Island. Nothing will stop you from seeing those turtles, but when a second squall blows through and your sailboat ends up dragging anchor in 2m of water, it’s really not your day.
Two of the rally sailboats watched a turtle nesting and a baby turtle release. With 20-80 turtles laying eggs every night on the crowded beach and hundreds of babies being released every day, Palau Selingan (part of Turtle Islands) is a turtle conservation project having a positive impact.
Each of the six sailboat owners on the Sail Malaysia Sabah Rally is responsible for their own boat, but we are all on standby to step in and help when the need arises. As always, our escort stays close by to ensure the pirates don’t come close…
