How We Sail Wing On Wing | Crossing the Lombok Strait to Bali | Ep 377

How We Sailed Wing on Wing Across The Lombok Strait

In this episode, we embark on an epic sailing adventure from Lombok to Bali, crossing the challenging Lombok Strait. Our crew had been waiting a year for this moment and were well prepared with their improved boat. With a 1200 nautical mile sail north and west to Malaysia ahead of us, we started by leaving Senggigi, which we’d come to know as beautiful and peaceful. If you’re planning a holiday, it’s worth visiting for sailing and relaxing by the water.

Preparation For The Crossing

Although we’ve done plenty of sailing before, this would be our first long voyage since leaving Saba two-and-a-half years prior. The anticipation was high as we planned our route across the Lombok Strait, known for its notorious currents and challenging weather conditions.

The Challenges Of Crossing The Lombok Strait

Navigating through uncharted territories and managing unpredictable weather systems posed great challenges during this crossing. The Indonesian Throughflow, or the waters from the Pacific filtering through the Sundra islands, significantly affected our journey.

The Wing On Wing Technique

To ensure a smooth and efficient sail, we implemented the Wing on Wing technique. With both spinnakers up and poling out, we managed to maintain an average speed of 6 knots with the wind ranging from 20 to 25 knots behind us.

Unexpected Weather Changes

As we left for our trip on the next day, our initial plan of stopping at a coffee shop in Bali had to be reconsidered due to unexpected changes in weather. Instead, we decided to limit our stay and get on with our long voyage.

Embracing The Long Voyage

As the journey unfolded, it was evident that our careful planning had paid off. The Southeast trades were consistent, but we always remained vigilant about any changes in wind or current.

Concluding The Adventure

Upon completion of this epic crossing, our crew reflected on the anticipation before leaving Lombok, the challenges faced during the journey, and how their planning paid off as they embraced the excitement of sailing wing on wing. They expressed their eagerness for more adventures ahead and what lay beyond the horizon. So there you have it – our tale of an exciting and challenging sail across the Lombok Strait. With the successful execution of our wing on wing technique, we were able to navigate through the unpredictable weather and treacherous waters en route to Bali, setting the stage for more sailing adventures yet to come.
Jamie explains how we pole out the genoa. It can be a bit tricky to set up, but with practice allows for a safe, fun passage. Sailing wing on wing (aka goosewing) when you have a following sea can give a rollicking fast ride anywhere, but across the Lombok Strait it doubled the adventure! This part of the Bali Sea is notoriously fickle (and on occasion impassable)...
