We thought it was about time that we were honest with our viewers and listeners about the kind of revenue that we get from YouTube, yeah, and then halfway through we’re going to take a break and do our last retrospective catch-up Vlog before we get to real-time. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves; let’s dive right into today’s discussion on this contentious subject – money.
Now, the reason why we are discussing the crude subject of money is that it came as a result of the video podcast we did two weeks ago, which was all about the integrity of YouTube sailing channels. I think we’ve kind of put that one to bed, but one thing did arise from it, which I really wanted to address. You had some direct correspondence with someone who’s managed to get hold of you and talk to you directly about something.
Yeah, so they sent a private message to me, and they didn’t want to be named, but their message went along the lines of: ‘Some of the feedback we are getting behind the scenes is that Follow The Boat want to impress the officials, and they’re doing this for their own good.’ Yeah, because people thought that we were just saying, ‘Don’t be nasty, don’t be unpleasant, don’t swear, don’t do this, don’t do that.’ We were laying down the rules, and we weren’t the case. No, I don’t think so.
Well, I know. So we have been cruising in Southeast Asia for over a decade now, and during that time not only have we got an understanding of the culture here but made a lot of friends. Some of those friends are indeed officials – people that organize rallies, marina owners, et cetera.
But I think the point is that we have no need to impress these people because we don’t get anything for it. We have nothing to gain by being nice to them or saying what we’re saying, but these you know, the officials that we were referring to, they know us; they know who we are, and we know who they are. So there was no real reason to try and impress anyone really.
But we’ll talk a bit more about that in a moment. I think when I read that message, I was first of all quite surprised – shocked, actually – that anyone would think that about us. Are we being disingenuous? Are we being naive? Do you think that’s natural?
I wonder how many people watch who watch the channel thought we were getting something for saying that as well. I’d be interested to know.
But anyway, going back to this subject of money… It was really brought to our attention because of the video podcast we did two weeks ago…
