Welcome to another fascinating episode of Follow the Boat, where we delve into the realities of sailing in an environment filled with both breathtaking beauty and significant natural hazards.
In this week’s episode, we find ourselves in a new location that is particularly relevant to our discussion. Just the other morning, I was woken up by a rumble and then the entire boat shook for a few seconds. It was an experience I had never felt before in my 20 years of sailing. The sensation was extremely unnerving and hard to explain. Of course, it was an earthquake – and we were in the Ring of Fire.
The Ring of Fire is a term used to describe the circumference of the Pacific Ocean, where volcanoes and earthquakes are incredibly common. In fact, it’s responsible for about 90% of all earthquakes worldwide, as per the National Geographic Society. We discuss our experience with these natural phenomena and why we decided to explore places like Catatan Kecil, an island near Mount Anak Krakatau, despite the risks.
We explore why cruisers like ourselves take on such risks and discuss how locals in Indonesia deal with these hazards on a daily basis. We mention our friend Graham’s experience during the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, which occurred while he was at sea. The local people of Assu island showed great foresight and quickly moved to their fishing boats when the earthquake hit, leading to the saving of all lives on that particular island.
Liz and Jamie also discuss safety measures taken while sailing in earthquake and volcanic regions. They mention government-initiated warnings, as well as the use of earthquake monitoring apps like CSEM-EMSC Latest Quake and Earthquake. While they acknowledge the risks, they can’t help but appreciate the beauty and the lovely people of the areas they visit.
Finally, we touch upon The Wallace Line, an imaginary geological division that separates two distinct types of flora and fauna in the region. It’s a reminder of how unique and diverse our planet is.

At 06:00 the boat shook to the sound of thunder: we had just experienced an earthquake at anchor.
Roughly 90 percent of all earthquakes and 75 percent of all active volcanoes on Earth occur along the Ring of Fire, and we have been sailing in this seismic minefield for the last ten years. We've experienced a few earthquakes first hand, but never before at sea.
In 2022, we arrived in the Sunda Islands where we have seen more volcanoes than anywhere else. In the podcast we try to work out why people choose to live in such a risky area.
Back in 2019, we sailed to one of the most famous volcanoes in the world: Krakatoa. We made two video episodes about the experience:
Krakatoa: Part 1 - https://youtu.be/A9pxb8NS3LM?si=5WXBwoO02p5POcs-
