The Greatest Gift My Parents Gave Us Wasn't a Thing

Sometimes the greatest gifts aren't things—they're the lessons and memories that stay with you forever. ❤️

This week aboard Isla, Nana and Gogo join our family to celebrate my 40th birthday, and what started as a family visit became one of our favorite weeks of boat life.

We waste no time introducing them to our underwater world before Gogo teaches us something that would completely change our adventures aboard Isla—how to fish! 🎣

He didn't just teach us the basics. My parents brought their deep-sea fishing gear aboard and made sure we were stocked with enough rods, tackle and lures to keep learning long after they left. We had no idea at the time just how much fishing would become a part of our family's life.

But fishing was only the beginning.

We sail to the British Virgin Islands to explore the incredible Baths, celebrate my 40th birthday in paradise, and later make our way to Maho Bay on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. From there, we hike to the historic Annaberg Sugar Plantation, where an unexpected encounter with “Mr. Do Good” gives us an even deeper look into the island's history and his garden.

And because no Finding Our Isla adventure ever goes completely according to plan, a natural “healing leaf” experiment for Gogo's sore knee turns into something we definitely weren't expecting. 😂

Back aboard Isla, Nana shares another family skill—sewing. We pull out the Sailrite sewing machine, get it running, and together tackle new curtains for our floating home.

Between the big adventures were the moments that meant the most: Nana and Gogo helping with homeschool, playing games with the kids, cooking meals, laughing around the table and simply becoming part of our everyday life aboard Isla.

This episode is dedicated to Nana & Gogo. ❤️

Thank you for the fishing lessons, the sewing lessons, the laughter, the love and, most importantly, the memories. Celebrating my 40th birthday with you aboard Isla was one of the greatest gifts I could have asked for.

Next week: It's time to point Isla south. Hurricane season is approaching, and we're beginning the journey back toward Grenada.

If you're new here, we're a family of five living, sailing and worldschooling aboard our Lagoon 450 catamaran, Isla. Subscribe and come along as we figure out family life at sea—one adventure (and one boat project) at a time.
