Introducing the Raymarine FLIR M300C Lowlight Camera Test on Tessie

Erik Aanderaa, an experienced sailor, recently had a brand new eye for his beloved boat, Tessie. This incredible gadget is none other than the state-of-the-art Raymarine FLIR M300C lowlight and zoom camera.

To assess its capabilities fully, Erik meticulously planned its installation on Tessie’s mast, creating a bracket with ScanStru and mounting it securely to ensure optimal performance. The primary vision for this advanced piece of technology was to enhance safety by providing a full 360-degree view around the sailboat while at sea.

The M300C features an impressive zoom capability, boasting 30x magnification. This extraordinary ability is not only crucial in spotting obstacles and buoys but also extends to scanning for icebergs or even polar bears while navigating Greenland’s waters – a must when Erik sets out on his solo expedition.

Despite encountering some unforeseen challenges during installation, such as the camera suddenly acting up before finally working correctly after resetting it, Erik persevered. This determination culminated in a sleek and sturdy setup, seamlessly blending with Tessie’s aesthetics while ensuring functionality remained uncompromised.

The integration of this high-tech gadget significantly impacts how Erik navigates, especially in low-light conditions or challenging weather. By testing the camera’s performance in varying wind speeds (up to 35 knots) near Húsavík, it became evident that this addition could indeed improve navigation safety exponentially.

Erik showcased the M300C’s remarkable features by manipulating its position remotely, displaying excellent gyro stabilization capabilities both horizontally and vertically. Furthermore, he demonstrated its ability to maintain a fixed view direction regardless of Tessie’s movements or shifts in orientation.

The benefits extend beyond mere visibility; Erik can now monitor vital aspects of the boat from within the cabin, including engine fuel, RPM, temperature, and sales condition, thanks to the CH platter connected directly to his Raymarine system. This integration simplifies overseeing operations without constantly needing to leave the cabin.

In conclusion, equipping Tessie with this impressive new eye has undoubtedly elevated safety measures while ensuring enhanced navigation capabilities and peace of mind for Erik on his future voyages. Stay tuned for updates as he explores further innovations like the WatchIT smart collision prevention system in subsequent episodes!

Check out the Tessie's new enhanced vision as Raymarine let me test their FLIR M300C low light and 30 x zoom camera. This is a big lift for my singlehanded navigation. The camera sits 4 meter up the mast on its Scanstrut support bracket, and is connected to my 3 x Axiom chartplotters. The camera is gyro stabilised, meaning keep the camera lens still while the boat is moving around in the waves.
It is able to keep a clear vision, even in very low light conditions. A 30 x zoom lets me see obsticles, ships and other objects far away to chart the surroundings while navigating.

This will be a very cntral part when closing into the ice of Greenland in a few weeks. I also hope to detect polarbears and whales as I enter the icy, cold coast.

Getting prepared for departure in just a few days now!
