Arriving back at Yates Marina Del Principado in Gijón, Spain after an epic 5-day sail from Ireland. This video is about the last leg of our journey which began earlier this year when we left Killybegs, Ireland with the plan to head down to Portugal but ended up here first due to some stormy weather.
One of the main goals of our channel and why we’re doing all these hops and hops is to eventually make that voyage. To sail from the western coast of Europe over to West Africa, so things like this leg – while it was shorter than our initial plan- it’s part of the process of getting there.
We made it into our marina in Gijón, Spain. The marina itself is on the west side of the harbor behind a massive breakwater which will protect us from upcoming storms.
Before we could officially check in with customs and the marina, I made a quick sail repair to fix a small tear that had developed in our light winds. Then I started boiling water for some coffee for my lovely wife Mo as she waited.
We attempted calling Yates Marina Del Principado multiple times via VHF radio and by phone before we finally got an answering machine instead of any real person to assist. We didn’t know where exactly to dock or which side of the boat to put fenders and lines.
Once we were secure, I went ashore and checked us in at the customs office just down the marina a bit from where we had entered. Our good friend Hazel has been waiting for our arrival since she sailed into this port a few days ago.
Upon completion of our arrival chores, we celebrated with the long-standing rum toast tradition that myself and Éanna have kept going since our very first voyage with Eric Forsyth all those years ago in Dingle, Ireland. We clinked glasses to this successful leg of the journey while eagerly anticipating future adventures!
We look forward to getting settled into Gijón for a little while as we plan our next moves and make final preparations for heading further down the coast to Portugal.
It was a hard sail across the Bay of Biscay as we raced a storm, but coming into a safe harbour made the whole journey worthwhile. Now it's time to see good friends and remember an old friend...Eric Forsyth, an epic sailor who first brought Éanna and Drake together.
