Heartbreaking loss reminds us, “Don’t Count Down The Days, Make The Days Count”

My last episode really resonated with people and I received more comments than any episode before. The episode drove home the point to not wait to travel and make memories but do everything you can afford to do, as soon as you can, because you never know how long you have left on this earth. I made that episode before I heard some heartbreaking news. I just felt this way because of my life experiences as a police officer.

I have seen a lot of people die unexpectedly in my 25years being a police officer and it gave me a strong feeling to always be trying to live life to the fullest while I can. Life can be unexpectedly short. This is why Janice and I get out and try to enjoy our sailboat, or motorcycle or travel as much as we possibly can in between our requirement to work. You don’t need a lot of money to travel and make memories. We have driven to Florida and Back many times and slept in our car at truck stops just to be able to travel as cheaply as we can.

I received lots of viewer comments from the last episode and one viewer’s comment in particular really hit close to home as he spoke about how he thought he was an active and healthy 55-year-old male and all of a sudden he felt pain and went to the Doctor and was told he may only have 60 days to live as he had tumours up and down his spine. Since his diagnosis, he has been doing the chemo and so far it is in remission but the chemo has really damaged his heart, so now he can’t be active. It was the strongest example of the point I was trying to make. Go out and do things that make memories now while you still can. It also really hit home because I had a close friend, Carolyn Garner, that also was battling cancer of the brain and spine. Many of you know Carolyn and those that don’t may have seen Carolyn on the Cruising Off Duty channel when I filmed the episodes where 2 other couples joined us to charter a catamaran in the BVI. That was filmed before Carolyn knew she had cancer.

Between the last episode and this one, Carolyn has died. She died on Feb 16th and it was way sooner than any of us thought. It broke our heart to have someone so full of life and so funny, always laughing and making others laugh, leave our world so soon. She will be dearly missed and our thoughts are with her Colin and the rest of her family.

When I went to Carolyn’s Facebook page, the top of the page had a saying that seems to say it my sentiments perfectly. “Don’t Count Down The Days, Make The Days Count”. Such a valuable message.

So take my advice and Carolyn’s and explore the beauty around you and GO MAKE MEMORIES you will remember for years and years to come. Don’t assume you will have time to do it later.

Much Love to you Carolyn for being such positive influence in our life. Our thoughts are with Colin and her entire family.
